Nothing can match the magic of European Christmas markets. After visiting over 100 Christmas markets across Europe in virtually every way possible, we’ve found that the absolute best way to do it is by river cruise.
But there was one problem. None of the river cruises we went on gave us enough time to get to the destination. And not everything is included. As soon as I stepped onto the ship, I felt hurt and dimmed. So my husband Michael and I chartered our own and spent two wonderful weeks in Germany and France!
When I envisioned hosting a Christmas market cruise, my dream was to create something truly special, an unforgettable experience that combines the magic of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets with the comfort of luxury travel and the joy of community. That was it. And in 2024, that dream will once again become a reality by chartering two spectacular cruises along the Rhine, bringing together 168 passionate travelers each week to experience the best of Germany and France during the holiday season. It became a reality twice.
Here’s a look back at our amazing trip, highlights, and what made the 2024 Christmas Market Cruise so special.

Why charter a boat?
Over the years, Michael and I have traveled to over 100 Christmas markets throughout Europe. We’ve explored them by train, car, and river cruise, but there’s no better way to see them than by boat. why? Because once you unpack it, the magic will appear right away. No more lugging suitcases along cobblestones, no more navigating crowded train stations, no more stress planning where to stay or what to do next.
charter Nico Spirit By creating a custom itinerary for your group, ensure maximum time in each destination, perfectly combine excursions with free time, and explore iconic markets such as Heidelberg, Strasbourg and Cologne. We were able to secure multiple options.
The best part? This boat was all ours, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere where everyone could connect, celebrate, and share the joy of the season.
It was a different atmosphere than usual! We created a group before the ship where we could chat, ask questions and get to know each other. I really love watching friendships develop. It was really something very special.
I’ll never forget when a woman said to me during a trip, “I can’t believe we just met. It feels like we’ve known each other forever!”
River cruise itinerary: Christmas market staples in France and Germany
cologne
We started our holiday season in Cologne, one of Germany’s most enchanting cities. Famous for its towering Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city is the perfect introduction to the Christmas market experience. Once the world’s tallest building, this iconic landmark houses the relics of the Three Wise Men and provides a breathtaking backdrop to the main market.
But Cologne is more than just cathedrals. it’s home 8 different Christmas marketseach with its own charm. From the twinkling lights of the Angel Market to the sea-themed market near the Rhine, there’s something for everyone here. And of course, we couldn’t help but enjoy the local Kölsch beer, served at the perfect temperature in small glasses. This stop will set the mood for festivities throughout the week ahead.
Koblenz and Ahrenfels Castle
At the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, Koblenz enchanted us with its combination of historic architecture and picturesque riverside scenery. We strolled through the Old Town and marveled at landmarks such as Deutsches Eck (German Corner), Schöngel Fountain, and the Church of Our Lady. The Christmas market here was intimate and welcoming, offering an opportunity to buy handmade goods and sip warm mulled wine.
We were able to easily walk on and off the ship to experience the Christmas market and eat some bratwurst.
For those looking for a fairytale-like experience, arenfels castle was the highlight. Surrounded by beautiful vineyards, this neo-Gothic castle dates back to the 1200s and not only offers panoramic views of the Rhine Valley, but also hosted a private Christmas market on its grounds.
It was a great day that also included sampling local specialties.
We spent one night here so you can easily hop on and off the ship to explore further. And we brought our favorite German band to serenade us for the evening!
Rüdesheim and the Rhine Valley
One of my favorite days! In the morning we cruised and then had time to see the day and night Christmas markets (which we do at every stop!!!)
We enjoyed breathtaking views as we cruised along the Rhine Valley. More castles per mile than anywhere else in the world. Its towering cliffs and centuries-old fortifications are straight out of a fairy tale.
Our port town of Rüdesheim charmed us with its half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and festive atmosphere. The included walking tour took us to famous landmarks. DrosselgasseThe narrow alleys are lined with quaint shops and wine bars, creating an atmosphere that’s straight out of a movie. Then finished with Mechanical Instrument MuseumThere we marveled at the fascinating music production machine.
We had lots of time to explore the market in the evening.
The optional tour allowed us to do more fun things like visiting a local coffee house and trying some of their famous coffees. ruedesheimer coffeeenriched with Asbach brandy, followed by a tasting at one of the region’s top wineries. It was the perfect blend of history, culture and luxury.
Heidelberg and Mannheim
Heidelberg stole my heart again. As someone who has lived here, this is a city I never tire of sharing with others. A romantic castle overlooking the Neckar River, a charming old town, and a huge Christmas market 100 festival stalls Made this stop unforgettable. Our walking tour included highlights such as the world’s largest wine barrel, castle ruins, and stunning views of the valley below.
Mannheim, on the other hand, provided contrast with its Baroque grandeur and unique lattice layout. For those who choose Optional tour to Bad Dürkheima thorough wine tasting showcased the region’s great varietals, paired with local sausages and sparkling wine. Yes, I had wine at 10am and I loved it.
Strasbourg and the Black Forest
Strasbourg, self-proclaimed christmas capitalit truly lived up to its name. the 100 foot christmas treewith over 300 food stalls and gorgeous Christmas decorations, it felt like stepping into a winter wonderland. Our guided tour included must-see attractions such as: notre dame cathedral It’s home to the astronomical clock and the picturesque Petite France district, where half-timbered houses line the canals.
Just walking around the city is an adventure. Enjoy a wonderful meal (orange mulled wine with honey – incredible!). The streets are literally exploding.
There is also a Baccarat chandelier. on the road!
Optional tours to black forest was equally fascinating. we, Vogzbauernhof Open Air Museumlearned about the traditional culture of the Black Forest, from cuckoo clocks to national costumes, and tasted the famous Black Forest cake.
stopover Gengenbachhome of the world’s largest advent calendar, now has that magical finishing touch. I especially like it because… it has Butterbeer!
Mainz and Wiesbaden
I think the Mainz market is undervalued. everyone. I love chimney cakes, but they’re hit and miss. Mainz officially has the best one I’ve ever tried! The food in Mainz is unreal.
Mainz was a charming city with a blend of history and holiday cheer. The hometown of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the modern printing press, is important and can be visited. Gutenberg Museum Here you can see the two original Bibles that revolutionized the world. The Christmas market here with the background. A 1,000-year-old cathedralI felt like I had stepped into a fairy tale.
Wiesbaden, available as an optional tour, offered a more sophisticated experience. Known for its grand architecture and luxury, this spa town charmed us with its stunning Christmas market and festive atmosphere. The towering spiers and gorgeous buildings were a feast for the eyes.
Cologne (again!)
Our trip came full circle back to Cologne. With incredible markets and festive energy, this city was the perfect place to say goodbye. We soaked up the magic of the holidays until the very last moment, as we strolled through various themed markets, enjoyed live music, and sipped one last mug of mulled wine.
We said “Auf Wiedersehen” with all our hearts and memories that will last a lifetime.
Onboard Experience: A Floating Christmas Wonderland
Our ships were more than just transportation. It was our home for a week and an integral part of the experience. Built in 2021, the ship had the feel of a mobile boutique hotel, with modern design, panoramic windows, and luxurious amenities.
- dining: There are three restaurants on board and the food was exceptional. Every meal was a pleasure, from casual light bites to locally inspired kaiseki meals.
- drink: All drinks were included (and premium alcohol, of course!), so you could always toast to the season with wine, cocktails, or beer.
- Relaxation: The ship had plenty of space to relax, including a sundeck, sauna, and a cozy lounge with panoramic views of the castles and cliffs on the Rhine.
Meal time. It’s truly a work of art and so delicious! One of the reasons we chose this cruise line and ship is because this is some of the best food I’ve ever had.
The gala dinner on board was also a highlight. Imagine this. A beautifully decorated dining room, delicious food, festive music, and a room full of laughter and new friends.
People: The heart of the cruise
The best part about organizing this trip was the amazing people who participated. Whether traveling alone or with a loved one, everyone brought their own story, excitement, and energy to the cruise.
Guests ranged from first-time European travelers to seasoned market-goers, and strangers became friends over the weekend. Onboard camaraderie extended to excursions, dinners, and even late-night chats in the lounge.
For me, this sense of community made this trip truly memorable.
We have already received messages that people are coming together for meet-ups and to visit each other. The friendships that are formed are incredible.
some highlights
Dancing to the band, having Maria, the cruise director, read “It was the night before Christmas” (I cried!), taking pictures by the Christmas tree, and having the crew dance with us all the way to Satalana. I’ll never forget toasting to newly engaged and married couples. .
I enjoyed the Christmas spirit to the fullest!
There was a Christmas market stall in Rüdesheim selling Amazon returns and…of course, some of our group bought a few packages. One was a safety vest, which they wore every night. One is the banner we put up.
As we left the ship, I enlisted the help of the crew to help remove the banner. “Your group was the best this year!” he said to me.
I have to agree.
Fun, joy, happiness, memories.
Looking back on our 2024 Christmas Market Cruise, we can’t help but feel proud of the amazing group of travelers who joined us, the seamless coordination from our cruise partners, the magical destinations that welcomed us with open arms (and so much more! I am filled with gratitude to the people of mulled wine).
More than just cruises, these trips were celebrations of the season, opportunities to connect with like-minded travelers, and experiences that reminded us of the joy and magic of Christmas.
