Wine Country has plenty of lodging options, but few leave a lasting impression long after you check out. Staying at The Charles Napa Valley felt less like visiting a hotel and more like being welcomed into someone’s thoughtfully curated home, where every detail was intentional but never overdone.
From the moment we arrived, the feeling was immediately obvious. We were greeted by the innkeeper, Renee, and his warmth set the tone for the entire stay. Hospitality can feel scripted. Here, it felt natural. Within minutes, we were ushered into the main living space where the evening’s banquet was already in full swing.

Happy hour worth lingering over
Picture this: a table decorated with wine, cheese, and snacks that quietly beg for attention. It wasn’t just a situation that suddenly came and went, it was an invitation to slow down. Chocolate-covered strawberries were placed next to the charcuterie board, which felt carefully assembled without being obligatory. And what about wine? Exactly what you would expect in Napa.
We left our luggage upstairs and came right back. Because, honestly, why wouldn’t you?
This type of social time is part of what defines the Charles brand. The property builds on the success of its sister property, The Charles Pacific Grove, which has already established a reputation for combining design with an inclusive, guest-first experience. The same philosophy runs through here in the heart of Napa.

A room where you want to relax
After settling in, we took some time upstairs to reset, and that’s when the room really revealed itself. Rich wood furniture grounds the space, and the spacious bathroom is flooded with natural light, making it feel like your own private, tranquil retreat. It strikes a good balance between refinement and comfort, without leaning too far in either direction.
Even if you have plans, this is a room where you’ll want to stay a little longer. This was one of those rooms.

Properties with stories to tell
Renee then gave us a tour of the property and told us in detail what was so special about this property. Originally a 1906 mansion built by Napa craftsman E.W. Doty, the space is well informed and marries its past with a fresh perspective formed by designer Charles Gruwell.
Energy changes outside. A fire pit flickers on the patio, a small waterfall rumbles in the background, and there are several spaces designed to do nothing. In Napa, it may be the best of all activities. Conveniently, we’re just minutes from downtown, with tasting rooms, coffee spots, and boutique shops all within reach.

A nostalgic morning
If the night is about relaxing, then the morning is about relaxing. As you walk downstairs, the smell of freshly baked waffles wafts through the air and instantly brings you back to life. Guests gather in the dining area and soon plates of food and juice begin to be brought to the table.
It’s not just the food that’s noteworthy, but the atmosphere. The conversation will naturally flow. Travelers exchange stories with each other. There is a feeling that everyone has the same little secret. This place is working well.

More than a stay
At its core, The Charles isn’t just about beauty or location, it’s about how people are treated the moment they walk through the door. That commitment starts behind the scenes and permeates through every interaction with our guests. From day one, hotel partner Ryan McCalligan has been intentional about building a framework that prioritizes inclusivity.
“From the beginning, we have intentionally invested in comprehensive hospitality training for our staff and scalable and repeatable hotel operations,” said McCalligan. “Our unique CHARLES Method provides a disciplined blueprint for growth.”
That structure is more than just an internal language; you can feel it in real time. There’s a sense that everyone is welcome here, from the ease of conversation at breakfast to the genuine warmth of the staff, and there are no caveats. For LGBTQ+ travelers in particular, such an environment is not only appreciated, but essential.
McCalligan emphasized that the goal is more than just a one-time stay. “Our main goal is to provide style, safe and inclusive hospitality experiences to travelers around the world,” he said. “We want this to become a movement in the hospitality industry and inspire others to create artistically designed hotels that celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion.”
It is a vision that feels consistent with the experience itself. Thoughtful, open, and rooted in making every guest feel at home.
By the end of our stay, it became clear that The Charles was more than just a place to sleep between tastings. That becomes your anchor. A place I look forward to returning to after a full day. And in a destination full of options, that’s what sets this hotel apart.
