The 19-year-old transgender student who was stabbed to death near the University of Washington on Sunday night (May 10) has been identified as Juniper Blessing, who is being remembered by her loved ones as “the most amazing human being we have ever known.”

Blessing’s family released a statement through the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance. santa fe new mexican foodon Thursday (May 14) described her as “highly intelligent, extremely talented and deeply sensitive to the needs of others,” adding that her death “not only devastates us, it debases the world.”

Blessing studied at the University of California’s School of Atmospheric and Climate Sciences. One friend wrote, “I wish everyone nothing but the best in their lives,” and her roommate described her as “very kind” and “down to earth.”

According to authorities, Blessing’s body was discovered shortly after 10 p.m. on May 10 in the laundry room of Nordheim Court, a privately managed student housing complex affiliated with the university. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office determined she had been stabbed more than 40 times, local news reports said. kilo.

As students and community members continue to mourn Blessing’s death, local LGBTQ+ organizations planned a private on-campus vigil in her memory. Seattle City Council member Alexis Mercedes Link previously called the killings “devastating and horrifying” in a May 11 statement, adding that Seattle “must serve as a haven for our transgender neighbors fleeing neighborhoods that are erasing their presence.”
