On December 5, 2024, transgender rights activists, including Chelsea Manning, Transgender people protested at the U.S. Capitol in protest of a new policy that bans them from using same-sex facilities that match their gender identity. The demonstration, which featured toilet sit-ins and dance protests, was organized by the Gender Liberation Movement (GLM), a grassroots group advocating for bodily autonomy and gender equality.

More than a dozen activists gathered in a bathroom across the street from the office of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), holding banners with messages such as “Flush the bigotry in the toilet” and saying, “Speaker Johnson. , Nancy Mace, our bodies are not up for debate!” GLM founder Raquel Willis led a group of transgender women into the women’s restroom near Johnson’s office, where they washed their hands, raised their voices and peacefully protested.

The day before the sit-in, activists staged a dance protest in the women’s restroom at the Capitol. Participants wore shirts that read, “Transgender people are not dangerous. Mace doubles down in the face of backlash
