the pit Star Supriya Ganesh opens up about her experience with gender dysphoria in a new public essay. This happened after Ganesh shared that they are queer and use she/they pronouns.
The 28-year-old actor, who plays the popular Dr. Samira Mohan on the hit HBO medical drama, recently left the show. The news was heartbreaking for fans.
the pit follows emergency department staff as they deal with high-pressure situations during 15-hour shifts. Each episode is set in real time and covers an approximately one-hour work shift.
The show introduces Dr. Mohan as a third-year medical resident trying to find the balance between hard work and speed. Ganesh’s character was a fan favorite.
Ever since this news broke, Ganesh has been in the spotlight. But now Ganesh has written a public essay. vultureIn it, she reflects on her own experiences with gender dysphoria.
She remembers being asked at a bar if she was a man or a woman.
“For the first time, I noticed his partner sitting across from him, holding back a laugh, and realized that what was in my pants had apparently been a topic of discussion between them for some time,” Ganesh wrote.
“I sat in silence all night analyzing the interaction and my body.”
Ganesh outlines that this was part of the gender dysphoria he experienced when he immigrated to the United States from India at the age of 18.
“I never questioned my gender until I came to America,” she continued. “Growing up in India, I always identified as a girl.
“I realized I was queer when I was in middle school.”
“I grew up with Sikh women who didn’t shave their body hair, men who held hands platonically with their male friends, and children who dressed up as women for fun (most boys had their mothers keep pictures of them cross-dressing for fun).”
“Femininity has always felt accessible in India, but I still questioned my sexuality. I realized I was queer when I became attached to a friend in middle school.”
Ganesh outlined that they discovered that “the South Asian subcontinent has a long history of queerness.”
“Interestingly, I also noticed that gender is portrayed as incredibly fluid. Hindu mythology frequently depicts gods switching between gendered personalities or merging into a third gender complex.”
The actors further stated that they felt “increasingly disconnected” from their bodies. “It was a more serious schedule than other classes, whether it was getting my curls done with chemicals, thinking about a nose job, or getting waxed so I wouldn’t end up with an unkempt, hairy brown girl.”
However, Ganesh outlines that things changed when she “finally (and thankfully) found a community with other queer people during her sophomore year.”
“We had honest conversations about experiencing gender dysphoria, how we perform our gender to the world around us, and where our performance fails. I kept my body hair looser and looser, played with my natural texture, quit weightlifting barre classes, and started experimenting with menswear.”
“I’m grateful to the queer artists and writers of color who helped me understand my experiences of this world and saved me from hermeneutic injustices that they probably had to face on their own.”
