first time conditionDirected by filmmaker Chase Joynt, the film follows Sarah McBride, who made history as the first openly transgender person elected to Congress.

The documentary chronicles McBride’s campaign for Delaware’s only U.S. House seat and the intense national attention that accompanied her victory. Her election coincided with Donald Trump’s return to the White House, putting her at the center of a rapidly escalating political battle over transgender rights.

According to the film’s synopsis, McBride enters Congress amid growing hostility from some Republican lawmakers, including restricting access to women’s restrooms in the Capitol. The documentary captures how she navigates these challenges while balancing her responsibilities to represent her constituents and become a national symbol of transgender visibility.

Director Joint stated that the film does not focus on explaining transgender identity, but instead focuses on McBride’s work and leadership in real time.

“As a trans filmmaker who has been making films about trans life for a long time, I’m not interested in making a film that explains what it means to be trans,” Joynt said. “Instead, we started paying attention to what she was saying.”

Ms. McBride described the documentary as an honest depiction of both the historic nature of her election and the responsibility that came with it.

“This is a candid exploration of my run for Congress and proof that representation and effectiveness can go hand in hand,” she said. “The only way to ensure that I am not the first but not the last is to be the best Congressman I can be.”

Produced in association with XTR, Optimist and Level Ground Productions. first time condition We explore pivotal moments in LGBTQ+ political history, chronicling the pressures, triumphs, and challenges of being a trailblazer.

The film will be released theatrically on June 12th in Wilmington, Delaware, and has since expanded to cities including New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Dallas, and San Francisco, with community screenings planned across the United States.
