Leave it to Scott Hoying and Mark Hoying to turn a baby name announcement into a full-fledged musical production.
The couple officially introduced their newborn daughter, Birdie James Hoyn, on Instagram, posting an elaborate original song entirely dedicated to the all-important question of naming their child for two very musical fathers.
The video is just as fun and chaotic as you’d expect, showing Scott and Mark workshopping potential names through song, and includes celebrity name drops, theatrical performances, and even a surprise cameo from Robert Irwin.
After some playful discussion, the two settled on a name with a personal connection: Birdie James. According to PEOPLE, Birdie was inspired by: Bye bye birdie One of the first songs Scott learned to sing as a child, James is Mark’s middle name.
After a multi-year journey to becoming parents, the couple officially welcomed their daughter as a surrogate mother on June 3rd.
“I wish there were more queer and gay idols in the media so people could look at their families and think, ‘Oh my god, I have an example of this too,'” Hoyn tells PEOPLE. “When I was growing up, that didn’t really happen. That’s why it’s so important for us to always put out the love… We always just want to show that we’re thriving, that we’re in love, and that we’re having beautiful babies, and we can do that. And I hope that it also changes the minds of people who think, “You’re gay, people shouldn’t be parents.”
A long-held dream came true
For Scott, becoming a father was something he wasn’t always sure was possible.
The Pentatonix singer previously spoke about growing up without many examples of openly gay family members and wondering what his future held as a gay man.
According to PEOPLE, the process of growing a family took several years and was made possible when Scott’s sister Lauren volunteered to be an egg donor.
The couple has been open throughout the process, regularly sharing updates with fans and documenting their exciting milestones along the way, including one that’s now going viral Music video gender reveal earlier this year.
Our favorite queer love stories enter a new era.
The pair started dating in 2017, got engaged in 2022, and tied the knot in 2023 in a stunning California wedding that was as fun and high-spirited as their fans have come to expect from them.
Since then, they’ve built a platform centered around celebrating queer love, family, and authenticity. Now they’re adding “dad” to that list.
And let’s be honest, Birdie James already seems destined to grow up in the most musical family imaginable.
The couple said they are now spending their days soaking up every moment with their newborn daughter, including dance parties, piano lullabies, and finally getting their schedules back on track.
If their latest announcement proved anything, it’s that Scott and Mark are approaching parenthood the same way they’ve approached every chapter of their relationship thus far: lovingly, a little theatrically, and with unabashed joy.
