Last Thursday I voted last Thursday to abolish a resolution that created a zone called the Charter of Family Rights. Notes from Poland Report. The vote was 13-5.
However, council members revealed that they are motivated only by financial considerations. The European Union withholds funds from cities and counties with such zones.
” [council] “We believe that more than 80,000 wa cut county communities cannot be deprived of the benefits that arise from participation in many programs and grants,” the translated council statement said. Notes from Poland. Therefore, this decision “is intended solely to prevent the exclusion of Sheep County residents.”
The county’s only hospital was to lose 175,600 euros, worth $200,000, in EU funding.
After the far-right law and the Judicial Party gained control of Congress in 2019, nearly 100 municipalities adopted the Charter of Family Rights. Some people didn’t mention it specifically LGBTQ+ People, but “instead, they express their support that they are only men and women, and “swear to protect children from moral corruption” (a language often used as part of anti-LGBT rhetoric), Notes from Poland. Many were defeated in court.
Law and Justice lost a majority in Congress in late 2023. There is now a governing coalition of Liberal and centralized parties, with the medium Donald Task taking over Mattheus Morawiekki as prime minister. The conservative Andrze Duda remains president, but the president is less powerful than the prime minister. DUDA is limited in time and cannot be launched this year for reelection. He approved fellow right-winger Karol Nowrocky in the election. This will be held on May 18th.
LGBTQ+ activists who created “Atlas of Hate” to map LGBTQ-free zones said they were noting that it was due to pressure from the EU and others.
“Thanks to the efforts of many people, groups and communities, over 100 discriminatory anti-LGBT resolutions and family charters have disappeared from Poland,” Paulina PajÄ…k told broadcaster TVN. “These solutions were an extreme manifestation of whole-body discrimination against LGBTQ+ people.”
“We are very pleased that this stage is coming to an end,” Jakub Gawron added. “But that doesn’t change the fact that these resolutions should not pass at all.”
