Missouri GOP fails to pass a single anti-LGBTQ+ law

For many years missouri has become one of the country’s most aggressive testing grounds for defiance.LGBTQ+ Law. It’s a Republican-controlled state, and lawmakers have repeatedly introduced bills like this: transgender young people, drag Cast, school policies and gender representation are at issue as part of a broader national culture war over LGBTQ+ rights.

No one passed this year.

In what advocates are calling a significant political upset, Missouri lawmakers adjourned their regular legislative session Friday without passing any of the 58 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced during the 2026 session, according to PROMO, the state’s leading LGBTQ+ advocacy group.

This victory comes amid an unprecedented wave of nationwide legislation targeting LGBTQ+ people, particularly transgender Americans. The American Civil Liberties Union currently tracking This year, state legislatures have passed 529 anti-LGBTQ+ bills, including measures to limit gender-affirming health care, bathroom access, drag performance, transgender student participation in sports, and LGBTQ+ visibility in schools and public life.

The proposals introduced in Missouri reflected nearly every major front in that broader legislative campaign.

One bill mirrored Kansas’ controversial anti-trans bathroom regulations. Other measures sought to remove sunset provisions from Missouri’s existing bans on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors and athletic participation for trans students. Additional proposals targeted spending on drag performers, classroom discussions about gender expression and diversity, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

However, all 58 proposals failed by the end of the legislative session.

“This moment, this victory, belongs to all LGBTQ+ residents of Missouri and everyone who loves LGBTQ+ people,” PROMO Executive Director Katie Aaker Lynch said in a statement Friday.

“A recent conversation with a parent of a transgender child reminded me of a simple truth: Lawmakers don’t understand that we will never stop fighting,” Aker Lynch added. “We will fight tooth and nail to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ Missourians and their families.”

Missouri consistently ranks as one of the states that introduces the most anti-LGBTQ+ bills each year. Republicans hold supermajorities in both houses of Congress. According to PROMO, the Missouri General Assembly has introduced 371 anti-LGBTQ+ bills since 2015, but only four have ultimately passed.

Advocates say Missouri’s results reflect years of infrastructure building in the deeply conservative state.

PROMO credited its legislative victories to coordinated lobbying, testimony at public hearings, direct outreach to legislators, and thousands of Missourians willing to publicly share their personal stories about how the proposed restrictions could impact their lives and families.

The group says more than 5,000 people have participated in advocacy efforts this year.

“Despite state leaders year after year insisting on restricting LGBTQ+ rights as a top priority, Missouri continues to make clear that LGBTQ+ people will not be scapegoated to gain political popularity,” said Sheila Berkowitz, PROMO’s senior director of public policy and advocacy.

“The Legislature gave us everything this year,” Berkowitz said, “but the incredible strength of our community and willingness to continue to participate ensured our victory.”

Missouri’s results are particularly striking because the state has already enacted extensive anti-trans regulations in recent years, including restrictions on gender-affirming medical care for minors approved in 2023. Among the proposals rejected in 2026 would have been to permanently extend these limits.

PROMO said Missouri joins Georgia and Kentucky this year as states where advocates have successfully blocked every anti-LGBTQ+ bill introduced during Congress.

But LGBTQ+ advocates in Missouri say this reprieve is likely temporary.

PROMO has now shifted its focus to defeating Missouri Amendment 3, which would have repealed Missouri’s voter-approved reproductive rights amendment, banned most abortions, and placed a constitutional ban on gender reassignment procedures for minors.
