In Outcome, friendship is what sustains you even when everything else falls apart. And according to Matt Bomer, that balance of chaos and connection far exceeded the script.
In a recent conversation, Bomer opened up about stepping into the role of Xander, a troubled movie star trying to get over his past and the loyal best friend of Keanu Reeves’ Leaf Hawk. The film is about addiction, accountability and social impact, and Bomer said he was drawn to the humor from the beginning.
“I read the script and it was the hardest I’ve ever laughed out loud…probably ever,” he said, pointing to the distinctive voices of screenwriters Jonah Hill and Ezra Woods. “There was something about this dynamic and camaraderie that made sense right away.”
A script rooted in true friendship
That sense of authenticity was no accident. Hill and Woods based much of the film’s central trio, Leaf, Xander, and Kyle, on their own long-standing friendship. That foundation made it easier for Bomber to step into Xander’s role as both a confidant and a reality check.
“You could feel their friendship baked into the script,” he explained. “It was about finding those rhythms and how they interact.”
Bomer also spent time observing the real-life relationships that inspired the story, adding a new layer to their on-screen bond. The result is a dynamic that feels more lived than acted, a key element in a film that relies heavily on emotional history.

Improvisation, divine microphones, and uncontrollable laughter
Although the script provided a strong foundation, result It came alive through improvisation. According to Bomer, scenes often began as scripted and quickly evolved into unpredictable territory.
“We did one take exactly as written, and then Jonah got on God’s microphone and started giving prompts,” he said. “He gave us situations and lines and we had to interpret them to fit the characters.”
This approach led to some unforgettable moments, and a few that nearly derailed the shoot entirely.
“Some of Cameron’s lines…I laughed so hard I snorted and cried,” Bomer admitted of co-starring Cameron Diaz. “It took me a while to compose myself.”
While not all of the improvised interactions made it into the final cut, Bomer did make one standout, which was a real-time combination of the credits scene featuring Drew Barrymore.
“It was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had,” he said. “Jonah signaled and prompted us from beginning to end.”

After interacting with an icon, it forgets that it is an icon
Sharing the screen with Reeves and Diaz might be scary on paper. But Bomer said he immediately felt at ease when they were on set.
“They’re central to my moviegoing experience as a human being,” he said. “But they are so sweet that you can forget all that and just be there.”
That down-to-earth energy helped the cast develop the easy-going chemistry the story needed, especially in the scenes where Leaf leans on Xander and Kyle while facing the fallout from the blackmail scandal.

Stage name that will be decided soon
Of course, not all moments were heavy. When asked about Leaf Hawk’s bold stage name, Bomer revealed that he had considered rebranding himself early in his career.
“I wanted to use my first and middle name, my mother’s maiden name,” he said. “But my father wasn’t like that.”
What are the alternatives? “Matt Staten”
Thankfully, his father intervened. “He was like, ‘You’re not good enough,'” Bomer recalled with a laugh. “And I thought you were right.”
A story that confronts the past with humor
At its core, result We follow a man trying to make things right as the clock ticks. Reeves’ Leaf, with Xander and Kyle by his side, is forced to revisit old relationships and repair the damage.
For Bomer, that combination of calculation and humor is what completed the film.
“There are a lot of things I understand,” he said. “And in terms of comedy, there was a lot of stuff that I felt was well above my paycheck. I was excited to learn and see.”
If the story on set is any indication, audiences can expect a movie that knows exactly when to laugh without shying away from dark territory.
