Hilary Duff has put an end to years of speculation. The singer and actor admitted that her new song ‘We Don’t Talk’ draws directly from her estrangement from her sister Hayley Duff.

In a candid conversation on CBS morning Along with Anthony Mason, Duff admitted what many listeners already suspected. Yes, this song is about her sister.

“Yeah, it’s definitely about my sister,” Duff said, explaining that the record needed to be released. Writing and performing it, she explained, gave her energy back. That honesty was not meant to provoke. It was meant to be processed.

turn the pain into a chorus

“We Don’t Talk” is featured on Duff’s new album. “Luck… or something.” When she first performed the song in London last month, fans immediately noticed the lyrics hinting at sibling tension. Lyrics that referenced jealousy and a desire to “go back to being a kid” sparked online buzz that the song was about a personal rift.

In the CBS interview, Duff didn’t shy away from the emotional weight behind it.

“The thing I miss the most in my life is not having my sister in my life right now,” she said, getting visibly emotional.

She added that it was not an easy decision to include this song on the album. For a while, she considered taking it off the tracklist. Ultimately, she chose to keep it because it reflected her lived experience. “This is literally just my experience,” she said. “I’m not trying to say anything bad.”

Duff also admitted that she didn’t know if Hayley would hear the song or how she would react if she did. She suggested that it would take a ballad longer than three minutes to repair the relationship. “I think I need to just exist as a person and do what I want to do,” she said.

long distance

The sisters, who used to frequently appear on red carpets, have not been photographed together in public since 2019. They also don’t appear on each other’s social media feeds. Rumors have swirled over the years about the cause of the rift, from political disagreements to alleged tensions between Duff’s husband, Matthew Koma, and Hailey’s spouse, Matthew Rosenberg. Neither sister has publicly acknowledged the allegations.

Back in November, Duff spoke to Rolling Stone about his return to music after nearly 20 years and hinted at “family drama.” She said she finally felt safe enough within her family dynamics to openly return to songwriting.

That openness now defines “We Don’t Talk.” Rather than seeing the situation as a feud, Duff describes it as sadness, the pain of losing someone she once felt inseparable.

This track resonates with listeners because it reflects the universal experience of loving someone deeply while living apart. For Duff, that marks the line. This story is hers to tell, even if it remains unresolved.

It remains unclear whether a settlement will be reached. One thing is for sure: Duff is no longer shying away from silence. She sings through it.
