Fans react to Bowen Yang’s tearful SNL farewell

The 35-year-old actor and podcast host became visibly emotional during the final sketch, in which he played a Delta One Lounge employee with a broken eggnog machine, alongside episode host Ariana Grande and musical guest Cher.

The final sketch was the perfect send-off for Bowen, who announced his departure midseason on Dec. 20.

Ariana paid homage to Bowen’s writing and sketch performances, playing a nostalgic family member who sings together while reminiscing over the phone.

When Rhonda, played by Ariana, eventually joined him to complete the song, it became clear that Bowen was struggling to hold back tears while occasionally cracking jokes.

Through his role, Bowen thanked all of his colleagues for their support.

After yelling at his boss, his boss, played by Cher, appears, clearly representing Bowen’s real life. SNL Boss, Lorne Michaels.

Bowen was in attendance. SNL For about 8 seasons. He first joined as a writer in 2019 and eventually became the first Chinese-American repertoire performer. SNL Third openly gay person in history.

It may be a cliché, but expression is important. For me, seeing someone like Bowen unapologetically himself (very gay and always online) was inspirational and a breath of fresh air. Thank you, Bowen.

It’s easy to say that throughout SNL Bowen definitely had his share of emotional moments in the episode, but the final sketch struck a chord with everyone. Some people were saying:

“This legitimate fact made me sad. Bowen was trying not to cry early on. I hope he still shows up from time to time, but I wish him all the best with his future projects.”

“If this sketch doesn’t make you cry, you don’t have a soul. What a bittersweet but perfect send off, on to your next adventure, Bowen!”

“Right now, I’m crying into my eggnog in the Delta One Lounge. Cheers to you for achieving your dreams and having the courage to start new ones.”

“The fact that we have two gay icons, young and old, to say goodbye to this gentleman who had a lasting impact on LGBT and Asian representation in comedy…an absolute beauty, a movie…a Cher and Ariana show, but Bowen made this moment his own. Farewell and best of luck.”

“He was the best thing that ever happened to SNL. He saved the show, and every time I saw him, I smiled. Even if the skits were terrible, I knew he would make me laugh. What a loss.”

“This is the best farewell sketch of any cast member ever. Ali, Cher?! Goodbye to his favorite? So cool. Congratulations, Bowen, you deserve the world.”

“An important human being… Bowen represents the best of America and humanity.”

“It was so moving to see this live. Bowen, you can’t imagine how much we will miss you.”

“It was a cute way to honor Bowen’s accomplishments on SNL. Well, it was touching.”

“Bowen learned from Cecily that going out alone for Christmas is a proper send-off. I’m happy for him. I wish he could have given Ego and Heidi a proper send-off.”
