Euphoria actor Eric Dane dies aged 53 following ALS diagnosis

Actor Eric Dane has died at the age of 53, less than a year after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease.

The actor passed away on February 19, according to a statement released by his representative. In his later years, he was surrounded by friends and family, including his “devoted” wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, who were “the center of his world.”

In April 2025, Dane announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly known as ALS).

“Throughout his battle with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same battle,” a statement from his representative said.

“He will be greatly missed and always remembered with fondness. Eric loved his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he received. The family requests privacy as they work through this impossible time.”

Dane is best known for his role as popular plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy.” Grey’s Anatomy He appeared in Season 2 to cause trouble at Seattle Grace Hospital and quickly became a fan favorite.

Dane remained on the show as a series regular from season 3 to season 9, and returned in season 17 for a guest spot.

After starring in the ABC drama, Dane starred in the following productions: euphoria as Cal Jacobs, Nate’s queer and hostile father, played by Jacob Elordi;

The show’s creator, Sam Levinson, paid tribute to Dane following his passing. “I am heartbroken over the loss of my dear friend Eric,” he said. variety February 19th. “It was an honor to work with him. It was a gift to be his friend. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be a blessing.”
