Cara Delevingne is embracing the label she once struggled with.
New interview in progress varietythe model, actor, and musician spoke candidly about her sexuality, her longtime discomfort with labels, and her girlfriend, who became her biggest supporter as she launched her music career.
The conversation comes after Delevingne made headlines earlier this month when she told the crowd during a concert appearance, “In case you didn’t know it yet, I’m a lesbian.”
When asked about that moment, Delevingne acknowledged that people online are quick to discuss labels because of her relationship history.
“People love to comment on things like, ‘She’s not gay, she’s pan’ or ‘She had a boyfriend,'” Delevingne said. “But at this point in my life, I’m very happy to say I’m a lesbian.”
Delevingne said she had “always hated labels” but explained that her current relationship helped clarify her view of her future.
“I don’t plan on being with anyone else for the rest of my life, and I want to start a family with this woman,” she said. “Yes, I am a very proud lesbian.”
The star also reflected on why she once found it difficult to accept the word “lesbian.”
“My own internalized homophobia meant that those words were something I really didn’t want to say or acknowledge,” Delevingne said.
She credits the rise in LGBTQ+ youth and representation with helping her change her perspective.
“I think it’s because of these amazing gay women that the younger generation has a sense of pride,” she said. “It’s incredible what you can do when you have that kind of representation and community.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Delevingne spoke fondly of her girlfriend, British singer-songwriter Minke, revealing that she was one of the first people to hear her music and was a huge support throughout the album process.
“She is my biggest champion,” Delevingne said, adding that she values her partner’s loyalty and encouragement as she embarks on this next chapter of her career.
They first met when they went to school together in England, where Minke was a year older than her. Delevingne recalled that she was drawn to the British singer-songwriter’s talent and quiet confidence long before the two eventually became a couple. “I thought she was the worst.”
Delevingne’s new musical era officially began this week with the release of her debut singles “I Forgot” and “Out of My Head,” following her recent signing with Warner Records.
