LGBTQ community services organization Baltimore Safe Haven has announced that it plans to expand its services in the recently acquired building currently being renovated at 806 North Collington Avenue near Johns Hopkins Hospital.
“The new facility, named Mary Lynn Washingtonville and the Harry and Janet Weinberg Foundation Community Hub and Resource Center, is set to open soon, marking a significant milestone with its ongoing mission to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone.”
“The expansion would not have been possible without the generous support and commitment of community donors,” the statement said.
A report from Baltimore’s WMAR 2 TV News said the building’s rooms will accommodate 20 people “who need a transitional or permanent home, including clinical resources under the same roof.”
Aiya Dunmonds, founder and CEO of Baltimore Safe Haven, completed the building’s purchase over Christmas weekend, but neither the news report nor Safe Haven statements revealed the building’s purchase price, according to a TV news report.
“We will spread our deepest gratitude [Maryland State] Senator Mary Washington, Rep. Kweisi Mfume, Mayor Brandon Scott, Borealis Charity, Astraia Foundation, Harry and Janet Weinberg Foundation, MOHS, COC and MDH. “Their unwavering support helped bring this vision to life,” it says.
“The new community hub will work with the University of Maryland, which includes mental health and wellness programming, to serve as a one-stop resource center,” the statement said.
Another statement on the website says that Damons, a trans rights activist, founded Baltimore Safe Haven in 2018. The statement says the group has previously expanded its establishment and expanded its services to provide housing services to members of the homeless and unstable LGBTQ community.
“The organization has also developed a wide range of programs and services focused on mental health support, physical health coordination, workforce development, legal support, advocacy, and community building.”
In July 2023, Safe Haven opened its DC office and drop-in centre at NE, according to NE, which stated that Dammons was trying to serve the LGBTQ community, especially the services offered by Baltimore.
