A24 movie promotion poster baby girlin theaters on Christmas Day, claims, “This Christmas, you’ll get everything you want.” And that’s exactly what this movie is about body body bodyDirector Halina Lane cuts into the scene from a woman’s perspective as Romy, played by Nicole Kidman, and Samuel, played by Harris Dickinson, begin to explore a Dom/Sub relationship that reverses the relationship of age and status. According to Kidman and Lane, power and generational differences are at the heart of the film.

“I wanted to make a film about power relationships, and they were portrayed in a completely different way, not only sexually but also in the workplace. And as a woman, how do you deal with these different power relationships? It’s how you deal with it, what’s expected of you, and what you really feel,” Lane says. defender. “So, for me, there’s a lot of power dynamics at play in every scene, using clichés and metaphors, and then stepping away from that and trying to be as authentic as possible to all of us. It was fun” and brings a fundamental honesty to these themes. ”

On the surface, Romy’s life is idyllic. She heads a cutting-edge technology company and is married to a loving and handsome man, Jacob, played by Antonio Banderas. They have two daughters, Nora (Vaughan Riley) and Isabel (Esther McGregor). She’s a queer teen whose modern approaches to sex and love are in some ways beneficial to her mother.

“Halina did that. body, body, So [she has an] understanding [of] “Generations come together to teach each other, and in this film it tends to be the younger generation doing the teaching,” Kidman says. “Esther, who played the daughter in this film, was very interesting. She’s very sensitive, but she’s also very strong, and I loved watching her and learning from her and the way she penetrated my psyche. I feel like I can now empathize with Harris.”

Despite her picture-perfect life, Romy takes time off from having sex with her husband to watch porn and fantasize about being submissive and without Jacob pampering her. Her fantasy comes true when Samuel joins her company as an intern. In one instance she witnessed a dog being controlled on the street, she said. While out at work, Samuel sends Romy a glass of milk and tells him to drink it at the bar. From there, she kneels in a hotel room and her powers change.

However, Samuel is not an experienced ruler. His proclivity is only fulfilled when he and Romy feel something for each other.

“They’re both playing these roles. They’ve never done it before, so there’s an element of anxiety in what they do. And how we explored that. I think part of the fun was showing it in,” Dickinson says. “But it’s interesting to think about where our understanding of sexual relationships comes from, whether it’s pop culture or porn or movies. It’s interesting to play with that. And I think Halina wanted that too, and that was always part of the conversation.”

The idea of the female gaze on screen has been part of Dialectics for years, and female writer-directors’ exploration of Dom/Sub dynamics in and out of the bedroom lends itself to these conversations. . Kidman talks about what it was like to co-star in a film with a woman who reveals so many different aspects of herself.

“[It felt] It’s a very safe, very intimate place. Very free and expressive, [she’s] He’s a great listener,” Kidman says. “It felt like she was able to say something and exchange secrets, but she was able to process it and put it into the movie. And through that, it was very freeing and it felt like we were exchanging secrets.” It feels very intuitive, and it comes from a very emotion-centered place.”

baby girl will be released in theaters on Wednesday.
