Human rights group Amnesty International UK has said JK Rowling’s sexual assault crisis center is “anti-rights”.
Beira’s Place in Edinburgh was founded by Rowling in 2022 with the aim of “providing practical and emotional support to women in a safe and supportive environment”. The center describes itself as a “women’s only” center and operates “in accordance with the Equality Act 2010”.
in new report Title from Amnesty International A growing threat: Britain’s anti-rights movementthe group outlines the erosion of women’s and LGBTQ+ rights in the UK.
“To understand the rise of anti-rights movements targeting women and LGBT+ rights.”
“It is important to place this issue within the wider context of the general deterioration of human rights protection in the UK,” the report’s summary says.
“Successive governments have introduced legislation that severely restricts the right to protest and freedom of assembly, and passed increasingly restrictive immigration and asylum laws that raise concerns about the UK’s compliance with its international legal obligations.”
The report also lists “anti-rights activists,” which it defines as “official or informal organizations, individuals, private and state actors whose objective is to limit human rights by undermining human rights protection in law and practice.”
“Some of these groups call themselves ‘anti-gender’ because they are clearly opposed to the rights and equality of women and LGBT+ people. But by targeting women and LGBT+ people, they also challenge the fundamental human rights principle that human rights belong to everyone equally,” the report continues.
“Human rights are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Restricting the rights of one group can also weaken protection for other groups, even if the effects are not immediately visible.”
At the end of the report is a list of “anti-rights groups” identified by Amnesty International.
Beira’s Place is recorded as a company registered in the ‘Gender Critical’ section, alongside groups such as the LGB Alliance, For Women Scotland and Sex Matters.
Other types of “anti-rights activists” include anti-abortion, Christian rights policy/advocacy, proselytism practices, etc.
