When Alaska Thunderfuck was dating her ex-partner, fellow drag queen and winner of the fourth season of the movie, rupaul’s drag race, Sharon Needles used to play the radio as white noise when she went to bed. But at a certain time in the morning, I wake up to right-wing radio host Glenn Beck’s rants.
“We were hearing it as a camp element about how ridiculous it was, because he’s really a drag queen.” RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2 he says, referring to Beck’s over-characterization of political scenarios, his theatrical style of storytelling, and his emotional and rousing speaking style.
“These right-wing figures are so disgusting,” she says. “So they wear little bow ties and try to say or do the most shocking things just to get attention, and that’s what they always do.
“And honey, they’re wearing So A lot of makeup. “Yes, it’s drugs,” she adds with a wry smile, “It’s evil, it’s stupid, it’s not pretty, but it’s drugs.”
During the summer, Alaska travels to different prides, visiting cities such as Seattle, Phoenix, San Francisco, Louisville, and Nashville, as well as her hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania. That was before heading to Fire Island and eventually embarking on a tour through Europe.
“It’s Pride season, so I feel like Batman in the sense that when the bat signal goes up in the sky, I’m there,” she says. “I’ve been going around and putting the finishing touches on some really intense new music.”
Naturally, one of those stops will be Washington, DC for Capital Pride Weekend. The popular drag queen, singer, and podcaster will be performing at KINETIC’s Toyland on Saturday, June 20th at the Echo Stage.
The party will feature an “adult play area” with oversized toys, light displays, and six hours of dance-focused music courtesy of DJs GSP and Matt Suave.
“He doesn’t really do backflips, split legs, jump off the ceiling, or dance, but he can make sounds from his mouth,” Alaska said. “So ever since I started doing drag, I was like, ‘I need to have a microphone in my hand.’ I’m not that good at lip-syncing, but I like making noise into the microphone. It’s one of my favorite things.
“So I’m going to come out here and sing a few songs really late at night to a room full of people dancing and sweating,” she continues. “And I can’t wait.”
Alaska said she often sings Whitney Houston songs. “I don’t think I’ll do it that night, but I’ve done some Tina Turner songs. I have no idea what I’m doing yet. So when I don’t know what I’m doing, I always say, ‘It’s a surprise!'”
She is almost certain to perform some new songs, including the recently released “Revolution.”
“I look forward to the dressing room the most. Seeing drag queens in the dressing room instantly makes me feel like I’m home, no matter where I am,” she says.
“What I love about drag is that there are really no rules, especially now,” she says. “It feels more open and I like that. I like the lawlessness of the art form of drag.
“Drags can be fun, but they can also make people uncomfortable. I think it can be both. And I’m sure some people are uncomfortable with it. Revolution is uncomfortable. If you want to say something, drag is the place to say it.”
