The Human Rights Campaign PAC has entrusted Democrat Abigail Spanberger to the next governor of Virginia.
The approval by the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization comes as some Democrats are urging party members to distance themselves from the LGBTQ community.
Spanberger, one of the more conservative members of the Democratic House Caucus for six years in the U.S. House, has been praised by several critics, especially for criticism of left-leaning voices within the Democrats, including issues such as public safety, national security and Israeli support.
However, Spanberger is not trying to alienate himself from past support for laws that protect LGBTQ people from employment, credit, housing, public accommodation or support for equal marriage, as evidenced by the vote for respect for marriage.
The HRC PAC highlighted its support as an essential characteristic of former lawmakers’ LGBTQ rights as most state legislatures are trying to limit LGBTQ visibility and return legal protections for LGBTQ people.
“Abigail Spanberger has shown many times that she is the champion of the LGBTQ+ community and will fight for all Virginians,” HRC PAC president Kelly Robinson said in a statement. “She understands that Virginia’s future success depends on the full inclusion and protection of all people.”
Spanberger said he was honored to receive the support of the HRC PAC.
“I am ready to work together to build the progress we have made to ensure equal protection for all Virginians under the law,” she said in a statement. “To ensure that Virginia is a welcome home for all families goes beyond protecting marriage equality. It means defending the rights of Virginians to live without fear of discrimination or harm.”
As a governor, Spanberger is committed to defending marriage equality and supports efforts to disgrace marriage equality in law. To achieve the latter, the Democratic-led Congress must approve two of the two votes on existing legislation in the early months of 2026.
