Dwarf planet Eris* was only discovered in 2005, but her astrology seems to be with us forever. Ellis is of A very dark goddess, and as such shares similar astrological characteristics with the Black Moon Lilith, which I have already studied in detail. But what makes Eris herself unique? What makes her more than just a female version of Pluto or an exoplanet version of Lilith?

ellis square pluto This is very interesting in terms of the so-called “Great Reset” and the challenges of transhumanism. Note that Apple’s (forbidden fruit!) former CEO Steve Jobs combined the Moon and Eris.
In mythology, Eris is the Greek goddess of discord, but there are two Erises. The first, Eris, is the daughter of Nyx, who gave birth to such troublesome children as Argos (Pain and Sorrow) and Dysnomia (Tortlessness). The second Eris is the bloodthirsty sister of Ares. So the first impression is a mixture of melancholy, sadness, and bloody rage.
eris myth
Eris, daughter of Nyx, unleashes children who create strife when someone takes an oath. Eris is simply doing her job of arranging fate. As a dark goddess, she simply makes ends meet and maintains the natural order. This Eris is about tough love and brings tough justice. Aspects of Eris, the sister of Ares, appear in the following myths:
Ellis wasn’t invited to the wedding, so he threw the apple with the mark on it. “To the fairest one.” Join a party where the most vain goddesses compete. Her anger at rejection and need for vindication is said to be the cause of the Trojan War. Her Lilith-like aspect is the fact that she was an uninvited guest, a disowned and banished person, and the thirteenth fairy who cursed Sleeping Beauty. Finally, Eris, like Lilith in the Garden of Eden, caused so much trouble with just one apple. But we have to look further than myths.
new 10th planet?
Even Ellis’ discovery was controversial. When Uranus was discovered, it shattered the perfectly constructed Hellenistic version of the solar system. Uranus showed the existence of another dimension…it broke the mold.
Ellis is a completely different story, she was discovered at a time when it was becoming clear that there was too much out there. The solar system was becoming overwhelming with new discoveries every week, so in Eris every new object was boxed up and classified.
Just before Eris was honored as the 10th planet, astronomers decided to end the madness and demote Pluto and promote Ceres. Together with Eris, the trio became known as dwarf plants. According to the textbook, Neptune is now the end of the line. Because of Eris, the expanding solar system has paradoxically shrunk!
Like Uranus at the time, some of Eris’ personality can be gleaned from the story of her discovery. Eris opens a large scary can containing Centaur, Plutinos, Kvewanos, and TNO. Is the outer planet a goddess? It’s time to contain it and control it. Ellis is once again left out of the party. This time, she also defeated the powerful Pluto, and in fact, if Eris feels wronged or disrespected, she plans to defeat everyone along with her. She exposes hypocrisy and takes an eye for an eye.

Ellis is the perfect whistleblower, but she has Batman’s Joker vibes to her. When she finally enacts her revenge, she does it in such style! Ellis is about poetic justice, and the scene in The Godfather when the gang wakes up in bed with the head of their favorite racehorse feels very Ellis to me.
The similarities between Eris and Ereshkigal are notable; in fact, Lilith was Ereshkigal’s handmaiden. Eris is a flamboyant fighter and activist, but above all, she is a warrior queen. Think Boudicca crossed with Julian Assange…Ellis was tentatively named Xenia, after the famous TV warrior princess also played by Lucy Lawless. It was known that discoverer Mike Brown wanted to call her Persephone, but the asteroid had already adopted that name. However, Eris retains characteristics of Persephone, being the Queen of the Underworld/Darkness/Night, and the fact that her orbit is very similar to Persephone.
As you can see in the diagram, Eris’ orbit is a tilted ellipse, and all the other planets are in a horizontal plane with respect to each other. Just as Persephone split her time evenly between the earth and the underworld, she seems to spend half her time on top of the plane and half her time under it. Eris is certainly eccentric, and her orbit deviates significantly beyond the Kuiper belt, but it does come close to Neptune. Its orbital period is painfully slow: 557 years around the Sun.

*update. This article was originally written 5 years ago. Since then, I have researched Eris quite a bit, used her in client readings, and saw a strong connection with the themes of Lilith and Persephone. An updated article about Eris written in 2011, “Dark Goddess as Ruler,” can also be found here. So I suggested that Eris should be the modern ruler of Libra (I still use the traditional ruler in practice, but the modern ruler is symbolically important for a deeper understanding of the outer planets). My updated Black Moon Lilith post and Ceres post contain more depth about the Eris/Persephone archetype. Here is another article about Ellis. Redefining femininity.
