We are wired to understand the world through stories and myths.
In millions of years of evolution, we didn’t have writing, books, or the internet. Our ancestors gathered around the fire and told stories, telling them in symbols and archetypes.
This is how knowledge has been passed down for tens of thousands of years.
In this way we Really learn.
So why do we approach a symbolic subject like astrology through abstract, demythologized concepts?
What if we looked at our birth chart not as an abstract structure, but as a story with a beginning, middle, and end?
Instead of theories and individual keywords, the Ascendant and everything that unfolds from it, Journey: The journey of the planets around the sun.
Astrology is based on the movements of the planets. On their journey around the Sun, planets separate, split, culminate, and return.
A natal chart (a snapshot of the planetary positions at birth) shows a particular stage in the planetary relationships, like a freeze frame in a long movie.
But once you bring this picture to life and animate it, you begin to see the larger story behind it.
All stories, including birth chart stories, follow the same kind of journey, progressing through the same stages and the same order, like stages in a cycle.
Joseph Campbell and the Hero’s Journey
Joseph Campbell, inspired by Carl Jung’s concept of individuation, noticed that the stories humans tell tend to be: similar structure.
he called it this hero’s journey, A template for understanding the world.
There’s a reason fairy tale, bookor blockbuster Follow the pattern of the hero’s journey. Because it captures the universal process of transformation.
Every story, and every birth chart, every planetary cycle begins with the end of something, the completion of the previous chapter.
In tarot terms, it’s the “hanged man.” In the birth chart, it is the ending 12th house.
And at some point, this floating energy start movingand something that came from the outside world call the hero to the frontfrom the Hanged Man to the Fool, marks the transition from the 12th house to the Ascendant and new beginnings.
At first, the protagonist usually rejects the call out of anxiety or fear.
However, the moment the hero sets out on his journey, help appears. Mentors arrive, signs appear along the way, and unexpected allies intervene.
Ultimately, the protagonist crosses the threshold, faces an impossible challenge, overcomes it, and ultimately returns transformed by the experience.
Patterns like this can be seen everywhere. From books to stories to your own life.
Every story begins when the hero is given a new challenge, whether it’s breaking a spell, rescuing a princess, or setting out on a dangerous adventure.
In the modern context, that might mean finding a job, building a relationship, or recovering from addiction. Then follow the hero steps to overcome this challenge.
The Hero’s Journey framework is so universal and timeless that it resonates with each of us no matter where or how it is applied.
The Hero’s Journey – 12 Stages of Individuation
In Campbell’s framework, the hero’s journey consists of: 12 stages. These stages – from “”call to adventure“to”solution” – corresponds to 12 universal archetypes of travel.
A similar structure can be seen in the birth chart. 12 signs, 12 housesand 12 sign based aspects Planets form periodically.
early stage is a conjunction – ending Life chapters, by design, open doors to the next world. something new. In a connected state of possibility, anything is possible.
In astrology, a conjunction marks the beginning of a new cycle between the two planets involved. In terms of the lunar cycle, this is the new moon stage. In the framework of Hero’s Journey, call to adventure.
Then the faster moving planet moves far enough away, semi-sextileintroduces new energy into the cycle. It’s what Campbell calls a “moment of hesitation.” Decline call.
Soon after, the protagonist accepts the journey and receives help – a stage Campbell calls “supernatural aid‘ corresponds to sextile side.
In mythology, this is a leader, ally, tool, beacon. In real life, it could be a conversation, a book, a chance encounter, or an opportunity that presents itself at the exact moment you’re about to move.
After sextile, square. This is in the hero’s journey real test The beginning – the square is the threshold through which the protagonist passes in order to move from the ordinary world to the special world.
After the first square, the planet continues to move in its cycle and the story continues to unfold in a predictable order.
The protagonist faces trials, rises to the challenge, and ultimately returns transformed. This is a universal growth process that we all go through in life.
Hero’s Journey and Planetary Aspects
in the case of campbell 12 stages of the hero’s journeyyou can map them naturally. 12 sign-based aspects of planetary cyclesconjunction, semi-sextile to opposition, and back to the semi-sextile at the end.
Through the lens of the Hero’s Journey, planets and aspects become more than just keywords and definitions. They are developmental stages steps – Specific moments in the protagonist’s journey.
When you look at planets and the aspects they create through Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey template for understanding the world, everything clicks into place.
Sextile is no longer a “soft aspect”; Sign to readthe signal you want to be Then comes a trail of breadcrumbs that point you in the right direction.
Square is no longer just a “hard aspect.” it is an initiation, cross the threshold An action game that requires you to leave the comfortable “everyday world” and step into a “special world.”
opening and closing aspects
moreover, Not all sextiles and not all squares are equal.
There are two sextiles in the cycle, the Hero’s Journey, and the sextiles that introduced – supernatural help – has a completely different purpose than what we call “.”closing sextile” occurs towards the end of the cycle after the hero completes his goal.
and the first square is called opening square (similar to the first quadrant of the lunar cycle) has a completely different goal. end plazawhich typically resembles the third quadrant of the lunar cycle.
This logic can be applied to any aspect within the chart.
It is possible if there is a trine either opening trine – happening early in the cycle – or closing trine. Different purpose, different energy.
When you look at it sideways like this, it suddenly starts to make more sense. Each aspect does not have an independent meaning, but becomes part of a natural flow of development.
