Finding love is something most people want. But finding your lifelong partner means experiencing a few failed relationships along the way. Relationships fail for a variety of reasons, but they can also lead to low self-esteem and harmful relationship habits. Luckily, there are ways to build relationship confidence once you think you’ve found your perfect partner.

When it comes to love, we’ve all experienced pain. Whether it was infidelity, poor communication, toxic behavior, or overall abuse, failed relationships leave us feeling scared. While it’s important to learn lessons from past experiences, it’s unfair to your new partner to still focus on the failures of past relationships. Here are 5 ways to build relationship confidence for a healthy, happy relationship.

1. Communicate honestly and effectively.

If you have negative feelings about your partner’s behavior or something that happened in the relationship, the best thing to do is communicate your feelings. How can they do better if they don’t know that you’ve done something that upsets them? Don’t wait until you’ve reached a breaking point to talk to your partner. Be honest, but also kind, and think about the best way to share the information.

2. Set boundaries and respect them.

If you constantly worry that harmful behavior from a past relationship will be repeated in your current relationship, consider setting boundaries before an incident occurs. Find time to spend with your partner writing down the boundaries that you feel are essential to the success of your partnership. Talk openly about past negative experiences. A good, loving partner will do his or her best to understand and respect those boundaries. Remember, for someone to respect your boundaries, you must respect theirs.

3. Remain open and vulnerable.

Believe it or not, being closed-minded won’t save you from heartbreak. In fact, it might even set you up for failure. Continue Vision TherapyOne of the best ways to build confidence in a relationship is to show vulnerability. You probably don’t like being sentimental or sentimental, but it helps the other person feel closer to you and meet your needs and expectations. Most importantly, the other person should feel able to be vulnerable with you, too. Showing the right amount of vulnerability also builds trust.

4. Develop self-esteem.

The best way to be good for others is to be good for yourself. Low self-esteem will show in your relationships. Lack of confidence can lead to unnecessary arguments and unclear boundaries. When you develop self-esteem, you know exactly what you’re worth, and as a result, others will know what you’re worth too. This means that when people know their worth, they’re more likely to respect boundaries and build more trust.

Developing self-esteem can be done in a variety of ways. Better Help She suggests some ways to do this, such as avoiding negative self-talk and celebrating your strengths. You can also practice positive affirmations and express gratitude every day for all you have and all you will receive.

5. Practice self-care.

In addition to cultivating self-care, practicing self-care is essential because it also sets a standard for your partner to exceed. Plus, feeling good boosts your self-esteem. If you feel confident in yourself, you’ll be able to feel confident in others, too.

The best ways to practice self-care are many and varied: go out on a date, enjoy a little shopping spree, or even take part in a relaxing activity like a massage, pedicure, or soothing bath.

There is no “right” way to have a healthy relationship. Reflect on your relationship and talk with your partner about areas you can improve. Use one of these methods to feel more confident and grow in your relationship.
