As we head into the fourth quarter, a season full of reflection, pressure, and emotional overwhelm, I wanted to pause and talk about something personal. I went to therapy. I have sat in those rooms and faced my past and worked through the trauma that has shaped how I show up, how I see myself, and how I see my body. Therapy helped untangle those stories. It helped me understand what was buried, what was normalized, and what was never mine to begin with.

That’s why I now advocate therapy for plus-size women, not just for women in crisis, but for anyone who needs support to navigate the pressures (literal and emotional) of living in a world that makes them feel like they’re too much or not enough.

If you’ve ever struggled to come to terms with your body, your voice, and your worth, therapy can help. I want to normalize this conversation in our community. Because healing is not just possible. So powerful.

Why this is especially important for plus-size women

When we talk about weight stigma, we often fail to name the person who feels it most strongly: plus-size women. In a culture where thinness is treated as the default “ideal,” larger women are disproportionately targeted through media messages, social expectations, interactions with healthcare, and everyday microaggressions. The pressure to shrink, hide, or apologize for being present becomes more than just an aesthetic problem. It becomes a mental and emotional health crisis.

And it’s not all in our minds. Scientific research supports this. Shame makes your world smaller. That means don’t raise your voice, don’t wear that outfit, and don’t take advantage of that opportunity. For many plus-size women, the fear of being judged is so strong that they avoid social situations, medical appointments, and even romantic relationships.

Therapy is a bridge to connection. When women begin to recognize which relationships are safe and positive, they rebuild trust in themselves. They set boundaries, find their voices, and build relationships rooted in mutual respect.
