Alex Aster, bestselling author of the hugely popular young adult fantasy series emblem island and light larksurprised her loyal fans when she released her latest novel star side Back in September. A fantasy novel about Barbie dolls is confirmed to be in the works (Barbie: Dreamscapereleased in August of this year) But no one, not even her agent in the early stages, knew that Astor was secretly preparing her next big project. It is a 500-page adult romantic novel about a young woman named Alice who, on a quest to secure a magic sword, takes part in a dangerous race to take revenge on the gods.
This is interesting for two reasons. Just in time for spring break, we have a new thrilling page-turner and we’re taking you on a stylish Aster book tour. If you’re familiar with the latter, you know that authors treat book tours like red carpets. We carefully curate press looks to reflect the aesthetics, themes, and characters of our latest books, with occasional Easter eggs for our discerning fans. We love a good method dresser.
Such a thoughtful approach requires careful planning. Before the excitement starts to build star sideThe author had already studied the Internet and planned his appearance. Think lots of silver, glitter, and Alice-inspired chain mail. Here, Aster talks about the process.
“I always try to match my outfit to the book in some way during release week. star side‘ cover is mostly silver with a blue sheen, so I chose a navy two-piece Oscar de la Renta suit for my appearance. The Drew Barrymore Show. The oversized golden buttons reminded me of the golden willow tree in a scene from the book. ”

You’ve followed a fashion theme for each of your book tours. How did you want to approach your look? star side?
star side Sword magic is the main focus, and silver is the best of high-grade metals. We knew from the beginning that the cover would be silver, so that means silver clothes! Also, since the knight is one of the main characters, I wanted to tie in some nods to chain mail.
If I could encapsulate you star side How would you describe your wardrobe in three words?
As eccentric as the starry sky, Metallic.
With such a thoughtful approach, when do you start planning your outfits? What is that process like? Do you work with a stylist or do you source it yourself?
Most days, I write in my office from early morning until late at night, wearing sweatpants or pajamas. Still, I love fashion, so I’m looking forward to celebrating the book launch through costumes. Once I decide on a color for the cover of my new book, I start thinking about the outfits I’ll wear during tours and promotions. You could call this marketing, but it’s really just a passion of mine, a little removed from writing. Costume sourcing typically begins about a year before publication and continues all the way up to the first promotional appearance.
“I obviously love Oscar de la Renta and have had the honor of wearing pieces from the brand at my last three book launches, but the moment I saw this Prada mesh dress, I thought, star side. The mesh represents a knight’s chain mail, and the crystal represents a glittering and dangerous world. star side. ”

What are some surprising things you should consider when building your book tour look?
Can you sit in a dress? Many of my publishing events are also book signings, which usually means sitting for hours. Luckily, I was wearing an Oscar de la Renta metal dress. summer in the city Last year I realized a few days ago that I couldn’t sit in it. Now I often sign at a bar-height table so I can remain standing. This will also make it easier to have a conversation with your readers.
Is there anything? star side Are there any Easter eggs in your outfit?
In preparation for the launch of sky shadeI wore a Clio Peppiatt custom dress that had a secret bonus hint. light lark As part of the book design. It ended up being at the back of the dress, but no one guessed it. Since then, I haven’t done many Easter eggs with what I’m wearing other than color. But I can say that I know what color my next new project will be…and it’s red! So I’ve already started collecting some pieces for that.
Looking at past tours, it’s clear that we love statement shoes. Do you have a favorite shoe moment from this tour?
Without a doubt, Rene Caovilla is a star heel! I love that her designs stretch around the foot and are incredibly comfortable. I wore it for 3 hours during the launch event at a big Barnes & Noble in New York.
“Continue kelly clarkson show It was one of the first exciting moments of my career. On my fourth visit, and at the first press moment of the book’s release week (!!), I wore this sparkling minidress by Oscar de la Renta. ”

“For my interview in ElleI wore an ice blue gingham check coat set by Oscar de la Renta. The flowers at the top are whimsical and the costumes have a spring feel to them that sets the scene for this book. ”

Do you think these looks are an extension of your everyday style?
My daily style is really sweatpants since I spend most of my time writing. However, the world I write about is whimsical and special, and so are the outfits I wear for book launches, so you could say that looks are part of my daily life. I also love stars and have a lot of sweaters with stars on them, so there’s that too.
star side This is my debut in a romantic space for adults. How was it a challenge for you as a writer to work on this novel?
This is by far the longest novel I’ve ever written, so it was challenging just in terms of how long it took to edit the book each time. Alice was also a complex character to write because, while fascinated by the magical world of Starside, she also harbors a great deal of feminine anger. She is unprepared, but brave, reckless, and strategic. She also feels it very deeply. When I was writing certain parts of this book, I cried a lot because I felt so connected to her in a way. Sometimes it was difficult for me to write emotional scenes because she’s been through a lot.
I said that writing this book felt like an exploration of myself. There were surprises, obstacles, breakthroughs, and times when I had to start all over again. It was a journey I looked forward to returning to every day for years. I’m so happy that it’s now available to the world.
You are writing your first original Barbie novel! What can you tell us? Barbie: Dreamscape?
Barbie: Dreamscape This is a journey of self-discovery through a magical land inspired by my love of fantasy and all things Barbie. I wrote the book I needed at a time of change in my life. I hope that anyone who picks up this book feels the same sense of nostalgia, hope, and joy that I felt while writing this book.
I was asked to do this project many years ago, and they kept asking me to choose the pink dress I wore to the book launch party!
