American costume designer Paul Tazewell He broke history on Oscar’s Sunday evening and became the first black man to winCostume design“Award for his work”evil.‘
He is the second black man to win the Costume Design Award after legend Ruth E. Carter The person who won his job at Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2018.
At a behind-the-scenes press conference, Tazewell shared
“This is the pinnacle of my career, I have designed costumes for over 35 years. There was a lot on Broadway and now I’m in the film, and going through it was a black male designer I thought I could follow and I could see as inspiration. And to realize that it is actually me, it becomes the “Witch of Oz” moment.“
In addition to his Oscar victory, Tazewell has previously won the BAFTA Award, Tony Award and the Costume Designer Guild Award for his incredible work in the fashion industry. The NYU graduate, who broke out on the scene with his Broadway debut in 1996, said, “Bring ‘da nose, da’ funk” has come a long way.
His costume designs have been featured on Broadway hits, including “The Color Purple,” “MJ,” and “Ai not Too Proud.” Needless to say, Steven Spielberg’s outstanding work on West Side Story (2021) was his first Oscar nomination. Four years later, Paul Tazewell returned to the Academy Awards to win his deserved award.
In a moment filled with joy, Paul was wearing a black custom Dolce and Gabbana suit in a white silk shirt and tie, decorated with a silver-adorned pendant. Paul Tazewell has been widely recognized for his work in theater, television and film over the years. It was great to finally see the winning costume designs of black men at the Academy Awards. Tazewell’s ability to create visually impressive and character-driven outfits has made him an icon in the fashion world.
