Atlantic-Pacific has a ton of tulle skirts and ball gowns, but we know many of you are also looking for everyday outfit inspiration. In this space, one of the most common requests I get is for comfortable airport outfit ideas. Last year, we shared a variety of travel outfit tips, and it seems like everyone is looking for style, but with a particular focus on comfort.
I’ve done a lot of traveling over the past decade, both for work and for fun, so I know exactly what it’s like to want to relax after a long day of travel. Today I’m sharing my favorite outfits to wear when you want to feel super comfortable. I’ll also cover some important things to consider when dressing up, as well as some easy-to-replicate comfortable airport outfits.
Why I love comfortable airport clothing
It’s no secret that we love to dress up whenever we can. But there’s a time and place for a statement dress and a time and place for a casual pair of sneakers. It’s certainly possible to look classy and chic while still staying comfortable at the airport. Traveling can be stressful – with carry-on bags toting around, delays and changes in plans. In short, a lotTherefore, it makes sense to choose comfortable airport clothing.
Things to consider for comfortable airport attire
Before I share with you my current favorite travel styles, I want to share some things I always consider when choosing these outfits: As with any part of traveling, planning ahead is key.
1. Avoid anything that is too long or too short.
When traveling, bending, reaching, and squeezing into tight spaces is unavoidable, and you might even have to sprint to make a connecting flight (I’ve done it!). For these reasons, you need to be mindful of the length of the clothing you choose. I try to avoid tops that are too short or pants that are too long so they don’t drag on the floor. I also try to avoid wearing extremely restrictive fabrics, which can constantly require tugging and pulling on an already busy travel day.
2. Be prepared for a range of temperatures.
We all know that traveling by plane can leave you hot or shivering, so I try to prepare for this by choosing comfortable airport clothing in breathable fabrics that I can layer up in. I also bring along a great cashmere wrap that can double as a blanket.
3. Make the most of your packaged parts.
While it doesn’t always work out, I try to make sure that some of the clothes I wear on travel days can be worn while I’m traveling. I hate overpacking, and I’m notorious for it, so I try to wear comfortable airport clothes that can be coordinated with the other clothes I’ve packed for my destination.
Unfortunately, traveling through an airport these days is full of surprises. Even if you’ve planned every minute of your travel day according to your packing list, the airport gods may have other plans. Long distances seem almost inevitable. For this reason, choosing comfortable footwear is one of the most important factors for a comfortable travel day.
How to dress comfortably at the airport
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s talk about the anatomy of a comfortable airport outfit. From bottom to top, these are the staples I wear to create a comfortable outfit:
When I want to travel casually, sneakers are my go-to. Sometimes I’ll switch to a nice pair of ballet flats or loafers, but at the end of the day, sneakers are the best choice. Some of my favorites include: Adidas Gazelle and samba (wear these As seen in the photo above, the classic Veja sneakersor a great pair New BalanceMany of the adidas Gazelle outfit ideas I’ve shared before are perfect for travel days.
I’m totally a millennial and I’m embracing this knee-high trend Striped crew socksI’m fascinated by the girls on TikTok. Plus, these socks are honestly so much more comfortable and practical!
Travel pants
Now, let’s talk travel bottoms. As I mentioned before, I like to wear breathable, stretchy, non-restrictive fabrics when I travel. For this reason, I tend to choose pants with elastic waists (or pants with a super comfy waist). I also try not to make my bottoms too long, because who wants to drag their pants on the floor of an airport bathroom?
Linen pants are the perfect way to wear something comfortable at the airport in the summer. This pair, This pairand This pairJoggers are also a great option. If you like the sweatpants look, these and these It’s great. If you want a more athletic feel, these (Wear the above) or these Both are good options.
Layered tops
When it comes to tops for travel days, layering is key. As a base layer, I usually wear my favorite tank top or a nice t-shirt. High neck tank And this slim fit tankboth of which are super affordable at Target. When it comes to t-shirts, I’ve previously rounded up my favorites. I’ve featured a wide range of options, from loose-fitting to fitted, so you have plenty of styles to choose from.
I always bring a jacket because the temperature can suddenly change from hot to cold during my trip. Fleece pullover or Classic Sweater Both are great for airport wear, and I also love the oversized crew neck. This one Or this one. If you’re looking for something a little more fitted but not too tight, this one might be a good choice. Striped long sleeve T-shirt (Wearing the top) And this Classic cashmere sweaterFinally, if you like stripes, This top and This topAll of these look great layered over a fitted tank top from Target.
Third piece
Depending on when you travel, you may need a third piece of clothing. As fall approaches, I wanted to share some of my current favorites. I always love a long vest. I feel like the longer length balances the look, especially when wearing joggers. Plus, when you’re done, they’re super warm, but don’t take up too much space and pack up nicely. Quilted jackets are also a great option. This one This product caught my eye recently, and I love that it is both functional and fashionable.
Extra touches
One of my all-time favorite travel items is a cashmere wrap. This one and This one Both are great options: they’re warm, they take up little space, and they double as blankets on the plane.
Another essential item for a comfortable airport outfit? A hands-free bag. I MZ Wallace Quilted Duffle Bagfits over the handle of your carry-on suitcase. Huge and lightweight quilted bag Another one of my favorites (pictured above) is the purse. I love that I can wear it over the shoulder or across my body, and I always choose ones that can be fully zipped up at the top.
