A year after its announcement, the long-awaited remake of the 1992 cult classic erotic thriller Single White Female has received a major development update. The new version stars rising stars Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell, sparking excitement among fans of the original film.
The official title of the remake is “Single Female”. Screenwriter Sarah Delap, known for her work on the 2022 horror-comedy “Bodies, Bodies” and the acclaimed 2016 play “The Wolves,” helped write the script. Delappe’s involvement brings a new creative perspective to the project.
Production details have not yet been revealed. Ortega, Russell, Stacey Sher and Marisa Paiva will serve as producers. However, the film does not have a director or release date set at this time.
The original “Single White Female” was directed by Barbet Schroeder and based on the 1990 novel “SWF Seeks Same” by John Lutz, starring Bridget Fonda as Allie and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Headey. The story centers on Ally, who takes in a new roommate, Hedorah, after a breakup, but their friendship quickly turns sour as jealousy and violence erupt.
A brief synopsis of the original film follows: “Allison Jones, who has just broken up with her fiancé Sam Lawson, welcomes a new roommate, Hedorah Carlson. The young women quickly bond, but when Allison begins to reconsider their engagement, Hedorah becomes jealous and hostile. As Allison learns new details about her roommate’s life, Hedorah becomes violent in an attempt to remove Sam from the matter. As Hedorah becomes more threatening by the minute, Allison finally understands.” ”
Jenna Ortega has been in the news lately for starring in last year’s horror comedy “Death of the Unicorn” and Season 2 of Netflix’s “Wednesday.” She is set to star opposite Glen Powell in J. J. Abrams’ new film The Great Beyond, which will be released on November 13th.
Taylor Russell is also busy as she is set to star in the Korean sci-fi thriller, Hope, alongside Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, and Squid Game star Jung Ho-young.
As fans await further updates, the ‘Single Female’ remake promises to bring a modern twist to the gripping tale of obsession and danger.
