When she appeared in court for sentencing, she declared that she was “proudly guilty of incorruptible sin.” She received a nine-year prison sentence for receiving a stolen painting, which was combined with an additional nine-year prison sentence for helicopter hijacking.

During the trial, it was discovered that she was pregnant. Her father, Eddie Gallagher, was an accomplice in both crimes. When I asked Dugdale’s biographer Sean O’Driscoll how their relationship developed, he said: Gallagher said“When you’re thrown together and there’s a shower of hounds chasing you to jail, and you end up in one bed, you know your way around. So what are you going to do? I can only talk for so long.”

Dugdale gave birth to her son Ruairi in Limerick Prison, and in 1978 Dugdale and Gallagher were married in the prison chapel.

Dugdale was released in 1980 and moved to Dublin to raise his son. Her early years as an IRA wannabe may have been a little ridiculous, but her later years took a more dangerous turn. Sean O’Driscoll, author of Heiress, Rebel, Vigilante, Bomber: The Extraordinary Life of Rose Dugdale: The Extraordinary Life of Rose Dugdale, told the BBC there was evidence that she was involved in the development of IRA weapons, and described how she regularly visited a safehouse in County Mayo and where weapons tests were carried out on the beach.
