In his new book published by Word on Fire, Beauty and Imitation: A Philosophical Study of ArtPhilosopher and novelist Daniel McInerney argues for the recovery of an Aristotelian understanding that art is fundamentally mimetic, or imitative. Even more boldly, he argues that this imitation is inherently narrative and moral, even in art forms that are not typically thought of as narrative art.
In this episode, Daniel introduces this mimetic theory, which then leads to a heated debate between him and Thomas about whether morality stories are really the primary purpose of arts such as painting and music.
