Blessed John Duns Scotus (1265-1308), a Franciscan friar known as the “Subtle Physician”, was one of the most important theologians and philosophers of the Middle Ages, but for centuries It has gotten a bad reputation, or at least been ignored. Compared to the “angel doctor” St. Thomas Aquinas.
Interest in Scotus was revived somewhat after Pope St. John Paul II beatified him, calling him “Defender of the Immaculate Conception” and “Bard of the Incarnation.”
Indeed, Scotus’ greatest achievement was the claim that Mary was conceived without original sin, a view controversial at the time but vindicated centuries later when it was proclaimed as dogma by Pope Blas. Proven. Pius IX. This is reason enough to know Scotus, even if he ultimately takes a backseat to Aquinas.
