dc schindler books Realpolitik: The church between liberalism and integralism This book is one of the richest entries in the ongoing Catholic debate over liberalism, political authority, the common good, and the relationship between church and state.
Schindler explains why liberalism is an “evil political form,” specifically because of its rejection of the Jewish-Greek-Roman unity embodied in the Christian form, specifically the Catholic Church. provides a nuanced and persuasive argument as to why this is the case.
Liberalism creates situations like the one described by comedian Stephen Wright. “Last night someone broke into my apartment and replaced everything with exactly the same thing.” It incorporates aspects of the Western tradition, but only on radically different grounds, creating a fragmented version of reality. have a vision. Even if liberalism claims to make room for religious tradition, it does so only by recognizing religion as merely an object of individual choice, and thus precisely non-traditional.
But Schindler not only criticizes liberalism, but also offers a deep and beautiful ontology of social order and a model of church-state relations that is somewhat different from that proposed by Catholic integrationists.
Schindler joins the podcast to discuss the book, including topics such as:
- Why is opposing non-liberal philosophy as “unrealistic” a rejection of humans as rational beings?
- Liberalism’s false claim of neutrality (or non-confessionalism)
- “Form of Christianity” and its fragmentation
- Why is liberalism an “evil form of politics”?
- The roots of liberalism in medieval nominalism
- Anti-Catholic meaning of the Declaration of Independence’s “Laws of Nature and Laws of Nature’s God”
- How a “neutral public square” overturns all traditions of “making space”
- The problem of distinguishing between “civil society” and the state
- Why assets are central to understanding the relationship between individuals and society
