Set in 1979, Chachu is about Leila, a 19-year-old Pakistani-Canadian girl whose hobbies include movies and pulp novels. Leila travels to California to connect with her estranged uncle, her “chachu.” Her “Chachu” is a middle-aged, semi-retired private investigator who was once famous for marrying the first star athlete hired. But when his wife mysteriously disappears again, they are forced into an impromptu street investigation, and her first taste of adulthood turns into a thrilling confrontation with family secrets, unresolved grief, and the illusions she and Chachu have built their lives around.

“I’ve always had a strong interest in comics as an art form, perhaps better than any other medium because of their ability to hold contradictions,” Vellani said. “It became especially meaningful to me while I was writing this.” ChachuIt was born out of the tension between lamenting one’s youth while still having it, and the constant urge to be an adult already. ”

“From the first time I read Iman’s script, I could already imagine this ’70s world emerging through the reflections of sunglasses and rearview mirrors, slowly emerging through cigarette smoke and neon lights,” said Ignazzi. “I set out to capture Leila and Chachu’s journey with strong black characters and a graphic style that felt emotional and deeply narrative. It was amazing to see my pages come to life through Geordie’s colors. She brought incredible atmosphere, warmth and cinematic depth to every scene.”

Vellani added, “It was a tremendous honor to build my first original series with such skilled collaborators. They all challenged and supported me, and this book turned out to be far better than anything I could have imagined on my own or in therapy.” Chachu #1 ” will be available in Comic Book Shop stores and digital platforms including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play on Wednesday, August 5th.
