LOOM: Kyung-seo Yoo’s Portable French Press Wins Platinum at the 2026 Houzee Awards

Portable coffee makers have become increasingly sophisticated over the past decade, but there’s one problem that surprisingly remains. Most travel French presses continue to brew coffee long after the brew is supposed to have finished, making the last sip noticeably harsher than the first. For a product designed for convenience, it’s a strangely unresolved compromise.

This overlooked flaw became the starting point for the portable French press “LOOM” designed by industrial designer Kyungseo Yoo, which recently 2026 Houzee Awards Platinum Award in Cookware, Bakeware, and Kitchen Tools Categorypresented by architecture collection magazine Under the ADC Awards Program.

Rather than making portability the main issue, Yu reconsidered something more fundamental: what actually happens inside a French press once brewing is complete.

All Travel French Press Problems

Most portable French presses have flaws that show up with every sip. When you lower the plunger, the grounds remain in direct contact with the brewed coffee for the remainder of your drink. Continued contact will continue to extract bitter compounds, so the last sip will taste noticeably worse than the first. And by cleaning, I mean disassembling the entire container over the sink.

LOOM addresses both issues with a two-stage filtration and separation system. Similar to a standard press, a microfiltration layer filters the powder during the initial brew. However, once the brew is finished, rotating the container’s top handle activates a second silicone-sealed isolation layer that physically walls off any sediment remaining in the drinking chamber, slowing down the brew as well as stopping over-extraction.

The body is insulated stainless steel and built to withstand daily travel and maintain temperature during your commute or on the trail. A removable lower compartment handles both ends of the brewing cycle (lees loading and spent lees removal) without disassembling the entire unit. The result is a blend of the functionality of a French press and the form of a travel tumbler in one brew-to-go-drink product designed for commuters, travelers, and anyone who wants to drink freshly brewed coffee anywhere other than the kitchen counter.

Exercises based on solving problems with your own hands

LOOM presents itself as a relatively restrained consumer product, but much of its innovation is hidden within its internal mechanisms rather than expressed through its exterior.

This approach closely aligns with Yoo’s design practice.

Currently, as a creative designer at J World Sports Inc., Yoo leads product development for backpacks and bags, overseeing projects from user research and concept development to manufacturing coordination and production. She earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from the Rhode Island School of Design with a concentration in computing, technology, and culture, while studying design engineering at Brown University. In this context, engineering performance is as important as visual form.

LOOM hides mechanical complexity almost completely, rather than showing it off. Users experience the solution through simple rotation gestures, but the engineering is largely invisible.

Evaluation beyond LOOM

Winning the Houzee Awards adds to the recognition Yoo received in 2025 and 2026. She won the Platinum Award at the 2026 International Architecture & Design Awards in the Product Design – AI Powered category for Solis Lamp and the Gold Award in the Pet Supplies Bowl category at the 2026 NY Product Design Awards. She was also named runner-up in the 2025-2026 A’ Design Award in the Pet Care, Toys, Supplies and Animal Products category and was selected as a fall 2025 recipient by Design Dispatch’s Future Forward Designs feature, which spotlights emerging designers.

An approach based on usage, not just form

Yu approaches each project from the same starting point. This means identifying where a product actually fails in everyday use and addressing that failure through form and mechanics rather than superficial styling. LOOM is a direct example of this. The victory was not in the object’s appearance, but in the filtration and isolation system that transforms the product’s performance over the course of its normal use cycle, from brewing to cleaning.

The same problem-first approach runs through her wide range of work, which spans consumer electronics, furniture, housewares, sporting goods, bags and backpacks. She explains that her process is built on strategic problem-solving and close observation of how people actually use the things they own, aiming for products that are functional, visually unique, durable, and realistically producible.
