Garden Variety, A Luck Based Card Game To Play With Your Kids

Garden variety This is a card game where you collect creatures and wild flowers to match the results of as many double the die as possible, while also paying attention to demonic gnomes. It’s a simple game that anyone can learn and play, with just 10-15 minutes to take, and can be played with 2-5 players. The game is published by Unstable Game.

What is in the box?

  • 54 cards
  • 1 Custom 6 side dice

How’s the play?

This is a card game in which the first player rolls the die, and the result of the die roll becomes the rule as to who wins the card used in that round. Players play one card at a time.

Garden variety components

Die may create one of the following rules:

  • The closest 0 cards win
  • The closest card to 3 wins
  • The closest card to 5 wins
  • The closest card to 7 wins
  • The closest card to 10 wins
  • Chaos – Reroll the die after all cards have been played to determine the round rule.

After the die rolls in any of the results above, each player plays the card. Each player starts with five cards. I have a Critter card with numbers 0-9, and some rare cards have 0 or 10, and when I play I need to determine if it’s 0 or 10. If you have a tie as the person closest to the number, use a color-based pattern in your logic. Blue beats red, red beats green beating, green beat yellow, and yellow beat blue. If this logic doesn’t make sense, then anyone who plays it wins, for example, because it’s a green and blue card.

Wildflowers display numbers 0-9, and if you tie them to another layer according to the number, the Wildflowers will always play creature cards. The last type of card is the GNOME card. These add a little prank to the game. When playing, use the effects listed immediately. It becomes extremely powerful when played at the right time.

After determining who wins by comparing cards from the first player to the next player, etc., the winning player gets the cards used in the place from everyone. After that, everyone will pull back five cards in their hands. The player who wins the final hand rolls the die and another hand begins. This continues until the player has no more cards to play and the game ends immediately.

Players count the number of cards they collect for their yard, and players with most cards win the game.

verdict

This is a fun little trick to take a rock paper scissor game, where you try to play the cards close enough to the numbers, but fight against other players trying to do the same. The card number is 0-10, so it could connect with other players.

Additionally, Gnomes can steal other players’ cards and win that round, allowing them to steal other players’ cards. With other GNOME cards, you can actually change the rules of the round, play another card, and win the closest.

The game is lucky more than strategic, but enjoying playing with kids is a fun game. The rules are easy to understand for younger children, so they like the game too. Factors of luck include the Roll of the Die and the cards you can get. There are options between the five, so it still affects the game, but in many cases the options are not complicated.

Garden variety cards

My kids love the art and theme of winning the tricks to put it in your garden. The card icon will lift your head to you about what you defeated in your colour and what you beat. It’s a 54 card game and I wanted to see a few more cards that allow me to defeat other cards. For example, you not only have Critter or Wildflower cards that beat them, but you also add the rare “automatically win” cards, but you beat the “automatically win” cards to 0 cards. Overall, this is a fun and easy game for kids and families to enjoy, and it’s small so you can take it on a trip!
