Cecilia Baugh (1855-1942) was, in the words of her colleague William Merritt Chase, “not only the greatest living woman painter, but the greatest woman painter who ever lived,” but most people today would blank out when they hear her name. A Gilded Age portrait painter born in Philadelphia, she was the first woman to teach art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and painted everyone from First Lady Edith Roosevelt to French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau. She was routinely compared to John Singer Sargent, a male equivalent in name and fame. There is no hint of the fact that Sargent is a household name and Bo is depressingly familiar with the way art history is portrayed.
In honor of her birthday, here are five of Beau’s paintings to feed your artistic soul.
1. The Last Days of Infancy (1883-1885)

2. Sita and Sarita (1893–94)

3. Ernesta (Nurse and Child) (1894)

4. New England Women (1895)

5. The Man with the Cat (1898)
