Fazerdaze releases new preview of upcoming album, “A Thousand Years” soft power. This song follows the lead single “Cherry Pie”. Check out the track’s self-directed music video below.
Amelia Murray of Fazerdaze released the following statement regarding the song and video:
Hi, it’s Amelia. I wanted to share my new song “A Thousand Years” with you along with the music video. This is one of the more electronic songs on my new record, Soft Power (released November 15th).
This track scratches the surface of a dynamic I experienced with someone 20 years older than me when I was in my late teens and 20s, a dynamic that lasted over a decade.
This clip was shot, directed and edited at my home in the middle of winter in Christchurch. I wanted this video and song to feel anxious, tense, lonely and isolated.
This video is a self-portrait of my experience with high-functioning depression. My characters exist in boxes that are never the same. It’s tight and dilating, but never at her mercy. I wanted to express a feeling of isolation and helplessness. My character may look calm in her make-up and suit, but psychologically she is not.
While shooting and editing this video, I thought a lot about Cindy Sherman and her process of taking self-portraits. She does her own makeup, sets up the camera, gets into character, and takes pictures of herself. All this work without anyone’s help. Knowing this gave me peace of mind as I put on my suit, experimented with my handycam, projector and simple textures during a freezing cold Christchurch night. I’ve spent years making music alone, and Cindy’s work guided me in creating this video (and of course the YouTube tutorial). You can watch it here.
When it comes to soft power, I hope this record makes people realize that true power doesn’t come from control or domination, but from something quieter and deeper within us. True power radiates from the heart, not the head, and is derived from love, not fear.
I hope that we will see a world where soft power takes center stage.
