albert einstein passionately proposed to his first wife Mileva MaricAgainst the wishes of their families, the two developed a turbulent but intellectually rich relationship. recorded for posterity in their letters. einstein and malick love letter The inspiration for the short film above. my little witch (in Serbian, I believe, with English subtitles) and some critical reappraisals of Maric’s influence on Einstein’s life and his early thought. Some historians have even suggested that Malick, who was trained in physics, contributed to Einstein’s early research. is hotly debated And it doesn’t seem to be very well proven.
The letters, written between 1897 and 1903 and only discovered in 1987, reveal a wealth of previously unknown details about Malick and his marriage. As controversy over Malick’s influence on Einstein’s theories rages among academics and viewers of a controversial PBS documentary, einstein’s wifescandalous personal items in the letter became a hot topic. better press. When Einstein and Malick’s relationship deteriorated and they tried to repair it with sellotape for the sake of their children, the callous pacifist wrote in outline form a list of appalling “conditions” that his wife would have to accept upon his return. list of notes transcribe them From the biography of Walter Isaacson Einstein: his life and universe:
conditions
A. Check the following:
1. My clothes and laundry are in good order.
2. Receive 3 meals regularly in your room.
3. That my bedroom and study are kept clean, especially that my desk is left to myself.
B. You shall renounce all personal relations with me unless completely necessary for social reasons. Specifically, you waive the following:
1. I’m sitting at home with you.
2. Going out and traveling with you.
C. In your relationship with me, you will abide by the following:
1. You will not expect intimacy from me or criticize me in any way.
2. You would stop talking to me if I asked.
3. If I request, you will leave my bedroom or study immediately without protest.
D. You promise not to disrespect me in front of our children by your words or actions.
It may be unfair to judge a person’s entire character by their most obvious flaws, but there’s no way to read this without shuddering. Einstein tried to save the marriage, but once they broke up for good, he did not mourn Mileva’s death for long. Manjit Kumar tell us in Quantum: Einstein Bohr and the great debate about the nature of reality Even though “Mileva agreed to his request and Einstein returned”
[I]It didn’t last long. At the end of July, after just three months in Berlin, Mileva and the boys returned to Zurich. As Einstein stood on the platform while saying farewell, he shed tears, not just for the memories he had made with Mileva, but for his two sons who were departing. But within a few weeks, he was happily living alone “in the constant silence of my big apartment.”
Einstein valued solitude very much. Another remark indicates the difficulty of his personal relationships. He eventually fell in love with his cousin Elsa, and eventually divorced Malick and married her in 1919, but the marriage also had problems. Elsa died in 1936, shortly after the couple immigrated to the United States. Shortly after her death, Einstein will write“I am very accustomed to life here, living like a bear in a den… This weakness was further strengthened by the death of a female comrade, who was better at dealing with others than I was.”
Einstein’s personal failures might have passed without much comment had he not been elevated to the status of a “secular saint” like his hero Gandhi. But it’s also the personal contradictions, vulnerabilities, and small, even incredibly insensitive moments that make the lives of many famous people so compelling, if confusing. Einstein scholar John Stackel says, “Einstein was made of too many idols. He’s not an idol. He’s a human being, and that’s much more interesting.”
