his September, Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1 celebrates Jessica Drew’s 50th anniversary with a jam-packed one-shot that celebrates her history and starts a new era for her.
First, writer Dan Watters (loki) and artist Andrea Brocaldo (spiderman noir) brings Spider-Woman back into the shadows, revealing a current situation that will shock fans more than a bioelectric explosion! A terrifying twist of fate awaits Spider-Woman. Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Varsitythe latest chapter of her intertwined lies and mysteries begins. Returning to her roots as a private investigator and teaming up with journalist Ben Urich, Spider-Woman ventures into a corner of the Marvel Universe that her fellow heroes fear, but will her embrace of darkness threaten her heroic legacy or even her sanity?
Speaking about his love for the character, Watters said, “Mysterious and dangerous, Jessica Drew has always been one of my favorite Marvel heroes, and I’m thrilled to bring Spider-Woman’s venom to the next chapter of her story!”
and writer Ann Nocenti (daredevil) Artist Stefano Raffaele (Alien vs. Captain America) in a detective novel. When Spider-Woman gets caught up in a strange incident in Los Angeles, she follows clues around the city that bring her face to face with one of her old enemies, the Flying Tiger.
As for how her story sums up Jessica’s character, Nocenti explained: “Everyone has flaws, and overcoming them is heroic. When editor Kayden McGahey asked me to weave a story for the 50th anniversary of Spider-Woman, I thought about how Jessica Drew’s spider pheromone scent can isolate people. It’s a great test of her detective skills as she uncovers clues despite her creepy vibe, and it also applies to a universal problem: We all have those ‘everyone hates me’ moments in our lives.
“In the 1980s, I was given the task by editor Mark Gruenwald to ‘retire’ Spider-Woman and end the series at issue 50. So it feels like a relief to come back to write a story about how Jess’ friendships and battles were hard won,” she continued. “Added bonus – art by the amazing Stefano Raffaele makes the story gorgeous!”
