Judy Bloom Novel about First Love in 1975 was rethinked in the series’ update in Los Angeles in 2018, with a cast consisting primarily of black actors. Trackstar high school student Keisha (Lovie Simone) and basketball player Justin (Michael Cooper JR) are childhood friends who have lost their touch. When they meet again at a party and fall in love, they face all the intense emotions and decisions that bring. For many years, Blume’s novels have been banned in several US states to directly confront the issue of the time when the character has his first sexual experience (Blume’s integrity is exactly what she likes), and this issue needed a new lens in the 21st century. But series showrunner Mara Brock Akil also leaned over the timeless theme of romance, and Los Angeles feeds it. “A better ratio phor for this love story than what LA represents,” she has I said. “You’re looking for a place to follow your dreams, and love is part of it.”
