FAQ
Why does my hair get tangled?
Tangles are usually caused by the hair cuticle being raised (the cuticle should be flat). This can occur due to your natural hair texture, dryness, or environmental stresses like wind, friction from pillowcases, and pollution, which can cause your cuticles to catch on to each other like Velcro, causing tangles, Small says. Other factors, such as hair length and the amount of chemical treatment on the hair, can also affect how often your hair tangles, he added.
What is the effect of detangling spray?
“These treatments work by smoothing and adding ‘glide’ to the cuticle, which greatly reduces friction between the hair,” says Small. This process, he explains, makes your hair easier to manage while also preventing breakage that can occur when brushing. Prowant adds that detangling sprays can also prevent the appearance of split ends, moisturize hair, and increase hair elasticity. Some can soothe the scalp and provide a protective barrier from heat and UV rays, she says.
How to use detangling spray?
We recommend using a small detangling spray in front Take a shower because “hair is most durable when it’s dry.” (The actions you take when washing your hair can actually worsen existing knots, she adds.) Spray the product on dry hair, working from the mid-lengths to the ends, then use a wide-toothed comb or flexible brush to start at the ends and brush upwards, she says. Afterwards, take a shower and use shampoo and conditioner as usual. If your detangling spray has heat protection, you can spray it again after you get out of the shower and before styling. By the way, anyone can use a detangling spray, but Small says it’s even more important for people with long hair or those whose hair is easily damaged.
