5 Edgy Ways to Style Your Flannel Shirts (with Outfit Ideas!)

What first comes to mind when you mention a flannel shirt? Perhaps think of it as a lumberjack, a grunge band, or something very fashionable yet cozy, a long summer night on a campfire. Am I right? Of course, this particular style of shirt is great in all these scenarios, but it may still be much more versatile than you might imagine!

It’s time to free yourself from the traditional and explore another, stylish way to shake up this classic piece. So, today’s blog posts should consider them as signs to take those flannels out of the wardrobe prison and finally wear them in style. I’ve collected some of the coolest outfit ideas to inspire you.

…under the dress or jumpsuit…

Are flannel shirts only suitable for top layers? squeeze! Forget this fashion norm. Instead, try style it under something! Fitted flannel can add amazing pattern and warmth when worn under a slip dress, an overall denim dress, or even a wide jumpsuit. The contrast between the sturdy flannel and the more feminine or structured pieces creates an effortless chic look.

  • Costume #1: Get a simple black dress, or a navy slip dress over a red and black buffalo check flannel, pair it with ankle boots and a delicate pendant necklace. Or, if you’re looking for a more playful, free hoho atmosphere, layer a thin flannel (thin) under a bright laundry denim whole dress with comfortable sandals. White sneakers also go here, but they provide a slightly different vibe.

…Half-tack/Half-button statement…

Full tucks can feel a bit too refined for flannel, and completely wasted shirts can sometimes look sloppy. Enter the Half-tack/Half button. This casual yet intentional styling trick involves only the buttons in the center of the flannel, then push only one side of the front, leaving the other side. It creates asymmetric and effortlessly cool silhouettes that are relaxing but perfect for the aesthetics of the story.

  • Costume #2: For maximum effect, pair a unique flannel shirt with a distressing dark wash skinny jean. For example, there are shirts with different patterns and textures sewn together. If not, choose the woods green and navy flannel in a thick plaid pattern, then tuck them halfway and button them with some thick combat boots and Cool beanies.

…Belted for definition…

Who says flannel won’t become a figure footer? This is probably my favorite unconventional approach to Oldie, but the Goldie flannel shirt really looks different. Tighten the oversized flannel with a stylish belt to add definitions and create a more tailored silhouette. This works particularly well with longer or tunic length flannels, converting from casual tops to more intentional fashion forward pieces.

  • Costume #3: Grab the oversized grey and white plaid flannel and tighten it to your natural waist with a wide leather belt. Finish this look with black leggings or fitted ponte pants and knee high boots for a sophisticated and comfortable outfit.

…As a light outer layer…

The trend for “shackets” (shirt jackets) is nowhere to go. Flannel is perfect for this role. Instead of thinking of it as just a shirt, think of it as a light jacket. Unbutton over a simple tee or thin knit top to naturally hang your sleeves or push them up for a relaxed atmosphere. Who can fit a thin sweater under the flannel? I don’t mind wearing something like this and meeting a transitional season of style. Plus, it’s easy to take off.

  • Costume #4: Start with slightly larger, larger blue and brown plaid flannels layered over a plain white crew neck t-shirt. Complete this easy and daily look with straight leg jeans Canvas sneakers. To dial the edge, switch to a band tee paired with black torn jeans and sneakers. This is a great way to inject it coolly quickly into your wardrobe.

Woman wearing a flannel shirt around her waist

…I’m tied around my waist (but I’m going to make it fashionable)…

Yes, the 90s are called and they want to get the flannel back…but in a good way! Tieing flannel around your waist isn’t just when it gets too hot. It’s an intentional styling choice that adds color, texture and a cool touch that’s effortlessly to a simple outfit. Make sure the rest of your clothes are clean and intentional.

  • Costume #5: A simple black T-shirt dress is tied with bold red flannel on the waist. Complete the look with white platform sneakers and a crossbody bag. Alternatively, tie a neutral toned flannel and a white tank top at the waist of black denim shorts for a relaxed summer look.

  • …Finally, I’ll tie it up…
YouTuber Charishka Mutya with her video guide ”7 ways to wear a flannel shirt”, shows you different ways to tie up and style a flannel shirt. Size, patterns, colors, and models are not important. Her approach works with what you might have. This way, you can get the most sharp clothes without investing in new pieces or pondering fashion movements.

Conclusion…

So the next time you pull out your favorite flannel, whether it’s a ’90s rif-about essential or a Versace Frankenstein monster, try to think outside the box. All flannel shirts deserve a chance. With these alternative styling tricks, you can turn this wardrobe staple into an incredibly versatile and incredibly cool fashion statement. Which alt style would you try first?
