Hey everyone! That’s me, Jess. If you missed the gift guide for Dad, Les, Boomer Dad, he quickly became a beloved contributor to EHD. And I couldn’t get any more biases, but honestly, I wasn’t surprised. He is my favorite person and sharing him with you is simply the best. (And more, he feels like a celebrity on the day the posts go up, and it’s pretty cute, ha.) But he doesn’t share with you and his specific, really useful gift ideas with you. Today he shows you a shed where he and his girlfriend pour their hearts (and perhaps some blood). This is a true DIY cabin. I was able to see it for the first time this week, and the photos are great (I’m only “great” as I have an iPhone camera and very amateur skills), but the warmth and comfort are actually overwhelming. Have fun in the woods with my father and his hut.

So I decided to buy a cabin in the woods. Being a centre-city boy from Chicago is a big move. I didn’t know anything about the outdoors up to Covid when my girlfriend and I bought the Airstream. I somehow found peace in that effort. So now I have a cabin in the woods. Built in 1920, it is located in the Forest Service. I own a cabin, but I lease the land. It dramatically reduces prices (we can’t discuss that). Anyway, this place looked more like the 1950s than the 1920s. I disliked it, but I saw some possibilities. What I didn’t see was the amount of work needed to make it our preference. I thought I could live in an old school. Well, if you live with a girl, I happen to live with you. hey. So, after a few months of effort, I think we’re done (though I never know).

The most difficult part was the floor. Lolinda wanted to save the original floor. I thought it was worth the shot, but I was skeptical. She said she would cover them with sand herself. Well, after peeling off the linoleum (I saved it a bit like I liked it for the pantry wall), she and her girlfriend got to work. Two days later, they were unable to move their muscles. By the way, there was a loud cry for one of our best friends, Cheryl. When I saw the original floor after they were finished, I was able to see the ground beneath the house. Eeks! Then I stepped in and lay down all the fresh plywood and new laminated wooden floors with a pair. Three days later, I couldn’t move any terrible muscles. Ha! After that, the rest was easy.

Originally, there were two entries in the kitchen. It seemed unnecessary, and it was. They built a pantry and eliminated the back of the walls by using it on television in the living room. I covered the back side with shiplap. We removed the living room cabinets and reused them in the pantry. One of them worked upside down. In my life, I saw things from an upside down perspective. Oddly, it seems to help me a lot, ha!

I bought an 8-foot piece of an 8-foot butcher block and created a new kitchen counter. I dropped a new sink (with my son’s help). It looks like a new kitchen. I also bought old butcher blocks and built a small island to prepare food. It works well and doesn’t take up the room.

Rattan Flash Mount

I left the appliances and made a tableware rack to cover the sides of the fridge. Now the bear looks at my window and he doesn’t look at the fridge. Yes, that’s what they’re looking for when they peek. Once they look at the fridge, it’s dinner time. (Who knew it!)

Lo asked me to set up a shelf of her pieces on top of the fridge (really smooth). She’s been wrapping around that piece of wood ever since I met her. I now have a house. She then found a small log of the right height from our property to support it from our property. Baskets are all kitchen paper goods such as wax paper, aluminum foil, and Saran wrap. Get creative in a small kitchen.

Wall Mount Bookshelf

For some reason, the previous owner made the entire joint drywall. If you ask me, it’s not that much “cabin ye.” So I went out and bought some notti pine tongues and grooves, and paneled some walls. It’s dyed darkly to fit the floor and beams (it feels like Davy Crockett now).

When you think there’s nothing new to teach your daughter’s boom! River filtration

The water I cook and bathe together is pulled from the stream behind the cabin. (Davy Crockett certainly). When I bought the place it didn’t have a water filter. Jess and I installed a filter in the river this week. I feel better now. Probably her first wader.

Copper water dispenser |Stand (Vintage)

I still need to bring in drinking water. I dragged a water stool from France and bought a copper dispenser to sit on it. It beats having plastic arrowhead jugs everywhere. The house is in a small, thin place next to the stove, which looks great.

I found an old shoe cobbler bench somewhere in LA and made a coffee table from there. I needed the thin thing I found and what nothin had worked for. Even my daughter wasn’t entirely sure of that vision, but it works. Ha!

Rechargeable light

The living room features Murphy’s beds. It was a bit boring. To change that, I lined up the inner walls with a shiplap. I also installed a rechargeable cordless reading light. Without consulting with LO, I discovered that the biggest stickers from Smoky existed. My intention was to put it under the light. LO didn’t have it. We ultimately compromised by peering at my pillow. Personally, I love it. I want to do something when I’m awake. In that corner of the room there is a letter zero. I use the same siding as the wall, but I think it’s too heavy. Today I’ll look into the pine ruan (¼ inch plywood). That might work. I am open to any suggestions. You are far smarter than me.

The Lumberjack folk art near the ceiling is my favourite piece overall

I have a lot of old and cool stuff around this place, but I really like the folk art that my friend’s father made (there is a lumberjack on the wall behind the stove). I don’t know that it works the same way here. That man has left this life and I cherish it. Of course, if his son wants to get it back, that’s fine.

Two chairs are for grandchildren, and they double as wall art. Glass cabinets and dining tables were found at a real estate retailer in Oceanside, California. I bought a lot from that place. The rug was a gift from Saint Cheryl, who helped wash the sand on the floor. It fits perfectly. Dining chairs were found at many consignment stores. I think they all came from different places. You must always know what you are looking for, and sooner or later know that if you explore my way, hit the number you want.

I tend to walk around the city and usually come across all sorts of (to say the least) shops. I wandered around this place in Amsterdam. Never, and I have never experienced anything like this before. As long as my nerves hold up, it was amazing. Ha!

The Cuckoo clock on the wall was dragged here all the way from Grindelwald, Switzerland. I think we’ll take trophies for what followed the international flights. We have been considered crazy on multiple flights.

Totovide toilet seat | Wicker table lamp | mirror | Vanity | faucet

The bathroom needed help (what did you not do?). Law chose a new vanity and sank from Lowe’s. Then I picked it up halfway through here and installed it, Prest-O Change-O. The mirror came from Wayfair. I also purchased a toto washlet toilet seat. I will never be any of them again. Now I have to tell you that I look forward to having a seat in my warm toto on a cold mountain morning. And I do it!

Antler Flash Mount

The bedroom was absolutely terrible. To make it more “cabin-like,” I made some wooden beams out of alderwood. I installed mounting blocks on the ceiling and beams on them. What a difference. Then I added antlers light to the center of the room, and what do you know, a rustic cabin.

The carving on the wall is a swallow. I leave them there and remind me of San Juan Capistrano, the city that raised the city and family that swallows return to each year. Addendum: I once signed a hotel register in a small town in Scotland. When the owner saw my address, he walked to the piano and played the song, When the swallows return to Capistrano For the whole family. It’s one of my greatest memories ever. How wonderful is this humanity?

sconces (Added cord and pull chain)

We put the slow rug all over. Bedroom wall to wall carpet I left the unit and I came up with a solution.

We installed a stackable washer and dryer in our bedroom closet. I don’t want to go back to 1920 in every respect.

We brought vintage armor for the clothes.

All lighting was changed, most were acquired through vintage and consignment stores. My total investment in facelift was about $10,000. Of course, most of the work was done by Davy Crockett.

Ah, that flower mat in my front door was linoleum under my kitchen

LED Solar Deck Light

Ultimately, I find comfort here. I met my neighbors from the road and they are very good. I don’t think this place was used in the winter. This year. I can’t wait to ski for free. This is the only terrible perk for a 75 year old. Jessica insulates all the pipes under the house when we talk (one of my kids!).

Behind the cabin there is a deck overlooking the American River. This river is quite cold so there is no need for a cold charge here. Two deck chairs were placed on the riverbank. It’s very good that I am umb. I can trust all of the physical labor, but the end of the design of this place belongs only to the LO. Except for the Smoky, ha! I think I’ll spend my time here. It’s hard to guess myself in the woods, but I’m here. The change is amazing. I don’t want to stop changing. New things are really encouraging to me. I don’t know if anyone has understood me (including me). I really hope I don’t do it. Whatever is around the next corner is even more exciting when you don’t know. I feel that even when I’m dead, even when I’m dead, there’s some kind of wonder and excitement for me. I hope that those who love me remember it. I pray for you all. I hope you all can shake hands with Mother Nature. I’m dancing with her as we speak.

Below is the front and after the photo. These are said to be called sliders. Hold the cursor in the arrow and slide it back and forth to see the entire transaction. Of course, EHD has all the latest tools for the best reading experience. Personally, I’m always blown away by technology. I remember the first cordless drill. I thought it was just a trend. I’m an idiot. Enjoy the photos!
