Richmond resident Ashley Smiley has always loved animals, but it wasn’t until she was laid off from her job in 2020 that she realized she wanted to work with them full time.
“My motivation for starting my own business came from a boarded-up building I passed every day in my neighborhood. My goal became to be the ‘corner pet store,'” Smiley said.
The vacant storefront at 5 W. Broad St. Dog House Cat Pet Supply Co., Ltd.is a full-service pet store with a self-serve car wash, dog treats, toys, premium pet food, and other pet favorites. Located in Richmond’s Arts District, the independently owned shop celebrated its one-year anniversary in July.

Freddie Harris, a Virginia native, left his office job at the company’s headquarters to become a franchise owner. ScentHound’s membership service provides dog health and hygiene care to improve dog health and enrich the connection between people and their dogs.
“We wanted to work more face-to-face, but we also wanted to build and grow a business with a strong company culture for our employees,” Harris says.
