I love celebrating women entrepreneurs who find creative ways to blend their passions with purposeful work. Recently, I had the pleasure of connecting with my emotional supporter, Shelby Ray. Shelby Ray Photos.
Her journey from being a teenager with a camera in her hands to building a photography business that fits into her family life is both inspiring and achievable. Shelby opens up about her early fears, the encouragement that got her started, and the rhythm that allows her to serve her clients while being present as a wife and mother.
If you’ve ever dreamed of working from home or wondered if you could turn your creative hobby into something more, Shelby’s story will inspire you to take the next step.
From dream to business
Shelby Rae is a wedding and portrait photographer who specializes in photographing couples, families, and high school seniors. But her work is more than photography.
“As a teenager and college student, I dreamed of one day being a stay-at-home mom,” she says. “I have always loved being creative and photography was a natural fit.”
That dream became a reality. Today, Shelby runs a thriving business while enjoying the flexibility of spending time with her children and providing additional income for her family.
Face your fear and take the first step
Like many people stepping into business for the first time, Shelby struggled with questions. With so many photographers in her area, she often wondered if it was “enough” to charge for her work.
She didn’t let fear hold her back and just started. “Thanks to my family and friends who trusted me and took the photos, I just jumped in and did it!” she says. Along the way, she gained an education, practiced her craft, and built confidence with each session.
Her story is a reminder that your first steps don’t have to be perfect. It just has to be taken.
The power of support and learning
Family and friends helped Shelby gain attention. They were willing to become her first customers, giving her the experience she needed and helping her spread the word about her business.
She also leans into social media, creating a page to showcase her work and then building a website where people can connect with her, view her portfolio, and book sessions.
Another game changer? education. “Amy and Jordan’s demo course was very helpful,” Shelby says. “I also learned a lot from Caitlin James and Rebecca Rice.” These resources not only honed her technical skills, but also gave her confidence in the business side of photography.

A look into Shelby’s days
No two days are exactly the same for Shelby, but she has developed a rhythm that allows her to balance motherhood and business with grace.
Most of the time, she can be found editing photos or handling business tasks during her son’s nap time. Throughout the day, she secretly types email responses and simple tasks on her phone. Sessions are scheduled when the husband is home, and weddings usually take place on weekends.
She intentionally tries to avoid overbooking and makes sure she has time to spend with her family. “That’s one of the benefits of making your own schedule,” she says.
Encouragement for other moms
For moms who want to start working from home but are hesitant, Shelby’s encouragement is simple: “Good luck!”
She admits it’s difficult to balance a young child and work, but believes it’s worth the effort. “Being able to be with my kids every day instead of relying on outside child care is so valuable. And being able to do something outside of being a mom while also contributing to the family income is such a gift.”
