Gretchen Made A Switch! Here’s How She Designed This Small Space For Guests, Just In Time For Holiday Hosting

Hello, reader! Does this wallpaper look familiar? Remember this MOTO photo (below) from my last makeover? I put DIY fabric wallpaper on a small two-bedroom room, shoved a queen bed in there, and called it mine. Or maybe you’re up to date and instead recall a more recent post where I introduced a terrifying second bedroom, aptly named “The Room of Doom”, and considered replacing the two?

The TLDR version looks like this: loved I intended to keep the original bedroom design and keep the furniture (and fabric wallpaper) forever, but I made the mistake of choosing the smaller room as my bedroom and left the larger room as my “office.” Instead, this large space became a dumping ground for estate sale finds, crafty junk, and miscellaneous junk you’d rather just shut behind the door and forget about. I was tired of the extra stuff and wanted more space in my bedroom, so I was hoping that by swapping two rooms I could finally free up a smaller room for guests. So I moved the bed and dresser to a larger room (which I love, by the way), freeing up the wallpapered room, a (mostly) blank canvas, for a new project.

During the switch you will have the opportunity to work with kismet all modern It fell directly from the sky into my lap. They specifically wanted to tell a story about entertaining visitors during the holiday season. like what? ! This was my chance! A timely partnership combined with an insatiable desire to design an organized and thoughtful guest space? Now my spare room dreams are in full swing. I can’t wait to show you how it turned out.

double sided desk

When I first wrote my room swap article, I wanted to use this second bedroom as an office space as well, thinking about how each area would look and function. Before entering into a partnership, I all modern desk (The piece that caught my eye was its clever double-sided, dual-purpose design). But the truth is, I like to do my daily computer work at the dining table, and I mainly use my vintage desk chair as an extra chair in the living room, so it just didn’t make sense to relocate my “office” to this small room. What I needed was storage (and sadly, this cool desk was just way too big).

Most of all, I craved a second sleeping zone that felt comfortable and spacious. A hidden oasis for friends, parents, or anyone who just missed a first date, where they can relax all night. Despite its modest size, the room felt spacious. It’s a private hangout that you can transform for your guests, but it also provides creative inspiration whenever you need to dig through your closet for art supplies. This old “wall fabric” isn’t going to be torn down any time soon, but we think we’ve given this familiar space a brand new feel with a generous dose of AllModern magic…

space for guests

Please take a look at my new and improved guest bedroom. It features a funky lounge space during the day, an artsy bedroom at night, and plenty of storage space for all my stuff. junk Treasures hidden in plain sight. Shall we dig deeper?

rug

One of the things I wanted from the beginning of Jump was a big hit of red. I knew this would help take the design in a new direction. I had envisioned a simple but interesting rug with splashes of color, and it wasn’t hard to find a winner. This one immediately! I love how its subtle uneven pattern references similar repeats in wallpaper. I also think the deep red color really anchors the space.

sleepr sofa

At first I imagined a green sofa bed here. that had It can be used as a sofa bed to save space and maximize the functionality of your room. But it is perfection Goldilocks green is a good choice to pair with the green on the walls and I didn’t want to use it by accident. Overall, I thought a more neutral beige, gray, or cream would be better. I was between the sofa beds. At first, I liked the 84 inch Cleo sleeper sofa It features a compact shape and an extensive list of customizable colors. But in the end I chose this one. Savelle 88-inch upholstered sleeper sofa (mink chenille) Because it shipped a little faster, had great reviews, and looked just as good. I was also hoping that putting a folding sofa bed on top of a pull out mattress would help maximize the space, even if the sofa itself was a bit long.

I’m really glad I chose this option. The oatmeal color looks great here and helps tone down the wild wall elements and allows the rug to stand out a little more. Plus, something neutral like this will work in almost any space you move into in the future. That’s what I focus on in works like this. I want it to last a long time!

But I also want to make it easy. So far, switching between features has been easy. To transition from sofa to bed, first remove the two back cushions, drag the bench seat forward (it has wheels and acts like a bed on wheels), then fold down the firm back cushion to reveal a brand new full-sized sleeping surface. Just add bedding. Flip it over and flip it over like Missy Elliott, and the couch will be back in no time.

The cushions are firm, but not at all like cheap futons. It feels like a dense mattress, but has plenty of bounce. Two cozy friends or one Emily Henderson will have no problem lying comfortably here. look? In fact, several guests have already stayed in this room (not my boss), and they all raved about the comfort. I mean, when we asked them how well they slept; teeth Maybe they were lying to me…but I happened to fall asleep in that bed recently. And I can attest that it was a very sound sleep.

gumdrop cushion | wool pillow | yellow throw blanket | side table | paper tree

You may remember some styling elements (cushions, side tables, chrome lamps, upholstered chairs, paper trees, etc.) from the recent Christmas at the Curly decor changes. That’s because I stole it for myself after filming. In fact, Em asked me to do a good portion of the shopping for that first holiday photo shoot, so I instinctively pulled items from AllModern that I thought would work in my space as well, in hopes of cutting down on the amount needed for both of our stylings. I chose the colors and textures that I liked, so I could use them here, so it made sense to keep most of them in the end. It’s a simple, planned theft. Sorry, but I really wanted it. jewel colored paper tree For myself. this is, holiday It’s a guest story after all!

wall shelf

Most of your junk can be stuffed into your closet, but I also wanted to include some cute storage items to keep the space clutter-free. I found it This super cute wall shelf This incredible little wall next to my closet was finally given purpose to display some of my favorite things. It was very easy to assemble and easy to hang.

sideboard

Then I met this something beautiful. Storage part In the wood tone I just lovedbeautiful lines…and secrets! For me, it felt similar to the double-sided desk that I’ve always liked. I think you can tell what it is at first glance. A dresser with nine drawers. Now move the little slider to the left for ultimate satisfaction. It’s actually a cabinet door! Hey, I love mean furniture.

side chair

Although the size is small, there is plenty of space inside. In my opinion, having doors instead of drawers makes it easier to access what’s inside, but is it just me? For now, this cabinet stores bedding for guests, but I’m sure I’ll eventually find a way to shove some hammers and vintage finds in there.

mirror | chrome lamp | vase | pink catcher

On the sideboard, This funky, amorphous mirror. I love it. It’s a curvy walnut with a bit of red (which is exactly what I expected when I first saw it online). It perfectly complements rugs and accent pillows, and pairs well with the storage area below (but not too closely). that lamp It was also a curly swipe. Its shape and material are very sophisticated and remind me of the last lamp here (which unfortunately broke).

chrome side table

small metal side table The one in the corner is a last-minute addition (eventually, a tall spiky plant or narrow bookshelf might go here instead), but I love what these balanced pops of chrome add to the space. platter Sitting on top of the cabinets is a great catch-all, and the pink matches the wall flowers. But when visitors come to stay, they’ll probably clean the surfaces so they can use them to spread out and unpack. However, what must be omitted is advanced design vase Send flowers to properly greet your guests when they arrive.

I filled the opposite wall with some of my favorite artwork. The large painting was painted for my mother by one of my mother’s college classmates, and I stole it and refused to return it. This dancer print, framed in bamboo, was purchased many years ago at a local Latvian bargain sale for just $10. And our newest addition is a piece that Em commissioned for us all from one of our favorite local artists. inside out. At our last team retreat, she surprised us with a custom art piece for our birthday. My title is “Shopkeeper”. This was the last piece needed for this small gallery wall. I think it hangs very nicely on both the bed and sofa. I didn’t even have to move the old swing arm sconce from my last remodel.

Well, guys, I think this sums it up! In just a few weeks, I was able to carve out a little dream space for all my future guests. all modern. The strong colors and wild wallpaper might be a little too much for some people, but that’s okay. But I’m really happy with the result. It’s fun and It’s functional, but the best part is that it gives you so much more room for activities. Even putting the sofa in “bed mode” works much better than before. I no longer feel like I’m tripping over crammed furniture or piles of homeless “belongings.” Now everything and everyone has a place. So what are you waiting for? come over! ! ! I’ll text you the address.

Sincerely, Gretsch
