Silver Dollar City Apple Turnovers — A Childhood Memory
Some of my favorite memories as a child are visiting Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. The amusement park rides, artisan demonstrations, candy shops, bluegrass music, and Marvel Cave all created unforgettable memories that I will cherish forever.
Every time we visited the theme park we went to Nellie’s Apple Butter Shop where we were greeted by the most amazing sights and smells – row after row of apple butter, jams and syrups, as well as the most delicious freshly made apple turnovers.
Delicious crisp triangular turnovers paired with warm apple cider were the perfect start to our morning at Silver Dollar City.
Make Your Own Puff Pastry Apple Turnovers Recipe
A few years ago, I found puff pastry marked down to 29 cents and started Googling recipes using it. When I stumbled across a recipe for apple turnovers, I was so excited that I could enjoy this delicious dish without having to travel to Branson.
The recipe did not disappoint! Soon, I was baking homemade apple turnovers in my own kitchen (and they now smell amazing!).
Apple turnovers look fancy but are actually super simple to make. They taste similar to apple pie but are so much easier and (in my husband’s opinion) even tastier. They make a great breakfast, brunch or snack and are delicious with coffee, tea or apple cider. A perfect recipe for fall when apples are cheap.
Ingredients for Apple Turnovers with Puff Pastry
- 1 package puff pastry (13.2 oz)
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 3 medium apples, peeled and diced
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil or butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon melted coconut oil (or 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh cream
Allergy-friendly recipe variations
Now that I’m married and have gotten used to cooking for my husband who doesn’t consume dairy products, I’ve tweaked the recipe a bit to make it safe for him to eat. He loves it and can eat several in one sitting.
This recipe is very allergy friendly as it can easily be made dairy free, vegan and gluten free.
- For dairy free: Use coconut oil instead of butter.
- Vegan: Use coconut oil instead of butter and egg mixture.
- For gluten free: Use gluten-free pie crust and gluten-free flour.
