Design Hot Take: Let’s Stop Chasing “Chic” & Instead Go For Whimsy (A.K.A. Joy)

Keep it right there! Before continuing to read, close your eyes, close your eyes, imagine something inside your home, bringing you great joy. A vase with a funny little pattern. You were nervous, but you did the colour of the wall anyway. After a long day, a bowl that always pulls out for an ice cream snack at night. A slow pillow that double take every time you walk it.

Did you come up with something? If your answer is yes, you are doing this “home decoration” correctly. If you have had trouble reminiscing anything, today’s post is here.

This is there. In good times and bad times (and let everything become reality, this is a bad time), the space we live in is supposed to add function, comfort, joy – value to our lives. But I often find that the last part, joy, is “chic” or frankly sacrificed, paralyzed by decisions that make you tense.

For example, you’re in the store, staring at what you’ve been drinking glasses. You will see a blue-colored blue glass goblet that will pitter your mind right next to your wise clear glasses. You are the hem and the hawk, and you are worried that blue is not just matching everything that appears on your open shelf. Or perhaps, in a few months or years, you’ll be worried that you’ll get bored of blue. Or, even stupidly, you might say something about you to a guest that you’re not trying to tell: you’re not chic or elegant. So you get a safe choice. And you do it over and over again in your home. To exist without feeling anything.

So today I’m here to free you. From a “good taste” grip so you can tilt your taste. Before I started writing this piece, I took him to Instagram and asked the people over there what they were nervous about doing in their homes. What they wanted, but scared them. Many of the answers were completely the same, and involved taking risks with paint and wallpaper. They all wanted whim, but whim felt that whim was too risky.

listen. This is your home. When we take care of our souls and spirits through the houses around us, we are better for it. We all need to have the privilege of coming home and smiling when we see painted ceilings and funky wallpapers. It may seem superficial, but such pleasure is far more important than we understand. Don’t feel a cheerful blip when reversing the light switch engraved on a morning bee. Or when setting up a cheeky little cocktail on a pasta-shaped napkin. Instead of the boring white ceramic ceramic, grab a mug of green splashed enamel. He’s bold. You owe yourself to be entertained by where you live.

Incredible mosaic floors, if appropriate. I saw this a few weeks ago and stopped dead in my (thumb) truck. In my memory, the caption I originally came across it reads something like “*Imagine choosing a plain square tile when this exists.” Of course, many of us need to choose plain square tiles due to budget constraints. All of the whimsical inspirations I have below are probably custom (read: expensive) choices. I’ll get it perfectly. But when you get the chance to sit or dance it, I hope you dance. In other wordsIf you have the opportunity to choose boring safe options, or something fun, adoring, adoring, then you will choose something fun, adoring. (#iykyk)

Before continuing with something more beautiful, fun and jazzy, here is a very scientific list of warning signs where you found something that will cause joy in your life:

  • You’re breathless
  • Your breathing catches your throat
  • You’re worried that someone else will beat you, and you’re in blind panic until it’s officially yours
  • Your heartbeat escalates
  • You laugh, smile, or dreamy eyes
  • You will feel light and happy again like a child
  • You forget that even a little bit of a country feels like a nuclear power plant on the verge of a meltdown.

Now that you’ve got the list, please show me some of the things that check my *box. Yes, because everyone reacts differently to things. Joy comes in many ways, and making me happy may not do the same for you, and vice versa.

I have long admired these absolutely amazing hand statues Set up a tablecloth with Sarah Espute. How can you see these and not smile? But they are very expensive (I’ve spoken over $3,500 on some of her unique pieces), and I’m sure at that price I’m sure it’ll be ruined by oil, wine, destroyed mac and cheese, as I want to erase it. Honestly, I probably hang it on the wall and call it a day. She does Selling napkins In this style, it costs around $200 per set, which may settle when at some point in my life I want to spend $200 on dinner napkins.

Many of my friends and followers commented that they wanted them to have nerves to paint their trim or doors (or ceilings) with dramatic and contrasting colors. Vestige Home’s Bedroom left. I’m not discounting the fact that there’s no cost to paint and time, but what’s the worst fact that can happen? Do you regret it and… paint it back? I think it’s worth the risk.

And about the right embroidered art by an Indonesia-based embroidery artist NengirenI just want to look at another example of the kind of work I had at home and laugh at it.

Why choose a standard spindle staircase (or even more character devoid of black metal “Modern Farmhouse”) when you can do this? There were many incredible staircase railings. I couldn’t share because I couldn’t pull from Instagram because I pinned it, but my goodness, (custom/expensive) options will definitely blow your mind. I deliberately do something different. Like Maison C. Studio The beloved contract wallpaper on the right.

Both of these rooms have me come back again and again, never getting old, and the flames in the middle of my chest always flicker like a dance in the cool breeze. Find something for your home that makes you feel that way.

Stained glass boundary window trim… are you kidding? Just a real joy.

Like I said, I realize that all of the above is $$$$. I’m not a fool. There are so many things to add to your home that can bring joy without bringing bankruptcy. Are there any things worth saving? yes! But sometimes, something is needed to make the four of them excited, less than the price of a Chipotle dinner. That being said, please read it, friends.
