Assouline has done it again, releasing coffee table books timed to major pop culture moments that are already buzzing (and being ordered all the time) as we speak. Of course, we’re talking about ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 arriving on Netflix on December 18th, and what better way to celebrate everyone’s favorite American’s return overseas than by buying and reading Assuline’s just-released ‘Emily in Paris: The Fashion Guide’ from her Classics collection right away.

If you’ve spent years obsessing over Emily Cooper’s wardrobe (Valentino capes, bright Chanel top coats, Christian Siriano dresses), you’ll be happy to know that a new book has been published. Finally Assuline takes fans behind the scenes of costume design for what she calls “one of the most aesthetically influential shows on television.” Coincidentally, both the costume design and the book’s writing are by Emmy-nominated Marilyn Fitussi. She is known for causing controversy each season with her maximalist tendencies, impeccable combinations, and natural ability to convey the fresh values of a particular character’s personality through her big-screen attire.

Lily Collins holds up her first official book “Emily in Paris” at Assuline’s launch event on December 9th.

This coffee table book includes a foreword by Darren Star, creator of the television series. I’m just honored From Emmanuel Macron, who aptly defended France’s soft power. This release spotlights 25 of Fitussi’s top sartorial creations and is sure to take you on a journey into how each look was sourced, the concepts that came to fruition and those that didn’t, and how she continues to keep her “refusal to follow the rules” at the heart of all her endeavors.
Here, expect big brands like the aforementioned Chanel interspersed with smaller ones like Paul & Joe (behind the colorful suit jacket worn by Ashley Park’s character Mindy Chen) and Ines de la Fressange, the Paris-based brand responsible for the amazing blue pants worn by Lily Collins’ character in the episode. In fact, the book makes clear that one of Fitussi’s biggest goals, given the current platform, is to make fashion more democratic by supporting emerging creators who explode in popularity after one or two product launches (the so-called “Taylor Swift effect”). She’s also not used to good collaborations. One of Emily’s best looks to date. Giambattista Valli x H&M Dress It’s made of chiffon (as you know).

Some of the outfits mentioned in Emily in Paris: A Fashion Guide feature a red bespoke coat designed by Fattusi herself and, in the image on the right, an embroidered cape by Valentino.

“This book is more than just a costume archive, it’s a love letter to Marilyn’s bold and colorful imagination,” Collins herself says of the 304-page work, packed with more than 250 top-quality illustrations.
What about the instant backlash Fitussi and her team received from the French community after the show first aired live? The author also mentions that.
“If you’re going to break the norm and show Parisians that there are other ways to present yourself to the world than the Parisian way, with muted colors and sharp silhouettes, you need to be prepared to ruffle feathers,” she says in the foreword. “We became fearless. We didn’t just want to piss off the French, we wanted to make them cry.”
Emily in Paris: The Fashion Guide is available now online at assouline.com for $120. Why not give it to your mom, wife, or sister this holiday season?
