If you are looking for a movie review, unfortunately this article is not about that. Zendaya is a triple threat star (yeah, I bet no one knows what that means anymore lol). A triple threat star is a Hollywood star who can sing, dance and act. But she doesn’t seem to get the recognition or praise she deserves. Well, maybe what happened with her latest movie will help. Zendaya’s movie “Challengers” hit the number one spot at the box office in its opening weekend.
It’s not #2. It’s not even sitting somewhere in the top 10. But the movie sits squarely in the top spot.
So why no flowers? You’d think that a nominated and winning actress would get a bit more respect, but Zendaya is still working her way up to reach a level where she’s recognized not just as a talented actress, but as one who can bring audiences to the theater.
Some people believe that her movies are successful only because of the genre. Sure, action, comic book, and sci-fi movies tend to draw audiences to the yard, but these aren’t the only movies she’s starred in. Still others believe that Zendaya’s work with actors like Tom Holland and Timothée Chalamet has contributed to the popularity of her movies.
Still, Zendaya got the chance to show a different side to The Challengers: She could actually star in a movie — and she took things very seriously.
To prepare for the role, she spent hours watching recordings of tennis players with similar builds to herself, including Coco Gauff, Venus Williams and Sharapova, studying how they moved and reacted so she could replicate those same characteristics in the film.
She also hit the gym. Hard. Over the course of 12 weeks, she built muscle. In fact, BuzzFeed reports:
“In terms of training, Zendaya, Mike and Josh trained for three months. Just before filming began, he trained for six weeks at a country club outside Boston. So Brad and his wife Kim Gilbert coached the three of them.”
Well, the hard work paid off. The Challengers debuted at number one at the box office during its opening weekend. There are no dramatic desert shots or amazingly swinging heroes. There’s just Zendaya, her acting talent, her incredible work ethic, and her desire to bring the lead role to life. Hopefully, this will be the catalyst for a change in the narrative surrounding her as a Hollywood actress.
