We need to talk about the silent price hikes that no one warned about.
I mean, since when did basic cost £120?
London silk presses cost between £100 and £120, depending on length and treatment. And that’s before you add Olaplex, trim, or anything to actually make it last. Even at the lower end, you can still expect to pay between £70 and £90 for what is considered ‘standard’.
Braids? A list ‘from £70’ doesn’t tell the whole story. Add in length, size, extensions and time and suddenly the minimum price is £120 and closer to £200 for longer styles.
Let’s be honest. This is more than just an occasional charm. This is maintenance.
This is how much it costs to look polished at work. To feel like myself. To exist without being labeled as “sloppy.”
Yet we are expected to silently absorb it, as if it were part of us.
Meanwhile, conversations about cost of living rarely include this reality. No one takes into account the cultural tax on black beauty. It’s time. money. The fact that our “basics” are now priced like luxuries.
So the question is not just “Why is it so expensive?”
It’s deeper.
Why do we have to budget like it’s a reward to look like ourselves?
